Worth doing engine mods with stock turbo?

Woodbury,
After researching all the parts I am looking to buy (BOV, boost controller, IC piping) it has dawned on me that I may just be wasting my time since I still have a stock turbo (the T25). I really had no intention of replacing it. Given this, do you think my engine mod ideas are just a waste of time and $?

Also, what is the problem with the stock turbo for a second gen? Is it just weak or what? And with the stock turbo is the most hp I can expect to get out of it 250-260?

I guess I am just looking for some opinions before I lay down $700.

Thanks!
Annie

Personally I think that you should get all the supporting mods in place BEFORE you upgrade your turbo. You can get a nice performance increase with a boost controller, hacked mas and a 1st gen bov.

Although 260 to the wheels seems a little high to me Im sure you can get close to that with some basic bolt ons. Then you might want to think about a big 16g they are only $600 right now.

Mods are always the best when you are close to stock. You can pick up easy hp for cheap. Right now Im at the point where I have to spend big dollars to go faster.

A kid in my area just got a 97 Tsi AWD.
Still has the T-toofive in it and heres what he did:

-Used 3" thermal turbo-back

-S-AFC

-Upper-pipe

-ACT 2600

-1st gen BOV

-A few gallons of C-12

he got a best of 13.3 at 102 mph or so.

So keep that stocker untill your ready to upgrade your WHOLE Air and fuel systems (ie Turbo and injectors)

My friend Buck has a 97 GSX with all the support you can bolt on.(Exaust, ACT, Redline fluid, Walbro w/ re-wire, brandy-new timing belt, new brakes etc.)
I think this would be the best way to mod as well. Were it might not be as fast as some other DSMs, he's ready to bolt on that GReddy 18G.

I would do the supporting mods even if you are not going to get a new turbo. The mods will open up you engine so that it can breath better. You will get more HP out of the mods if that is what you are looking for. In my opinion 250-260 HP out of the stock turbo will be really hard to get with out doing the mods. Also if you want that kinda power from the stock you will probally need to have a perfectly tuned car. Also by doing the mods if you decide to get a new turbo later your car will be ready for it. Check out this link for good first mods.

looks like were both in the contest for sponsorship.

But repeating my post won't help you that much! JP:p

Yes keep the stock turbo, and see what you can get out of it. It does pretty good, just not as good as a 16g or bigger thats all.

BTW if you use the Et method for HP, the kid I know in the 97 TSi made
280 horse to the wheels.

Peace out

HRC and RRE I think both have spots on their website that say the stock turbo is good for up to about 275 HP (they don't mention whether that's at the wheels or the crank....assuming they're measuring it the same way DSM does when they tell you your car has 210HP from the factory, that's a gain of about 65 HP).

Besides, as everyone here has said, if you were going to go further with the mods, you'd need all that stuff anyhow.

Oddly, your short-term goals sound pretty close to mine...I just want to make some power off the stock turbo for now, starting with BOV, FIPK, MBC, etc....trust me it might not sound like it based on talking with people on this forum, but a 250-260HP DSM is a pretty fast machine....you will definitely see a smile on your face when you step on it at about 40 and feel a ludicrous pull all the way to 90 or so :)

Thanks for all the comments! You help me more than you know! Keep them coming if more people have opinions on the matter.

thats about maxing out a T25.. I coulda prolly made around 240-250 or so with better tuning and a FMIC.. but figure my 222 is around 260hp and thats what you were lookin for..

I think crazyjoe has this one. To add a larger turbo you need to have all of these mods in place first. If you put them on now, then they are out of the way and the next time you have some free cash, It's turbo time!! I am in the same boat as you two, I have the same mods on the way, and a fuel pump.
