my good buddy airbrat passed-me-down his old 3 pod pillar, so its time to fill it up with goodies.

im looking to get a 60mm / 2 3/8"ish black faced egt in c* or f* with the probe and wires. id like to pay $150ish, but i can go up to $200 if its necessary.

so the contestants:
GReddy 60mm black. love the look of it. green lighting, but i can get over it. the peak/hold is $225 and the regular $195. i could deal with a lower price. doug's dynopower has both listed at $180 on a little dropdown menu. im wondering if this is a mistake or not.

Apex'i 60mm black. LOVE the look of it. the price is too high though. $290 OMG

VDO 2 1/16" cockpit series black. boring looks, but i dont mind. no peak/hold. $160 everywhere ive seen.

Omori 60mm black metric. surprisingly good looks. the big minus is that the company is based in malaysia, has no prices for anything, and i have no idea if it comes with a probe or what. mailed these guys. page is www.omorimeter.com

autometer cobalt series. this one would match the blue/red interior theme i have going quite nicely, and the price is $160. unfortunately i can only find 52mm versions which would slip n slide right out of my big pod hole.

just a small addendum: i really want the probe to come with the gauge, and i really would prefer the drill and tap method over the strap-tight probes.

every autometer ive looked at is 2 1/16" :(
on the picture, it shows the probe with the strap around it, but it also has what looks to be a threaded thing sitting next to it, like you could use one or the other (or both).

must learn myself some egt knowledge!

thanks:)

I would stay away from autometer. I have the Greddy Peak Hold and have no complaints. If you have to have the APEXI sent in for warranty work, it will take forever to get it back because it has to go to Japan. My friend had one and it seemed to read slightly higher than what it should.

why stay away from autometer? because they have been doing this longer than most other companys?

I'm a fan of the autometer "race" EGT gauge. Yes it cost more than their regular one but it's worth it.

The idea is the gauge is electronic and not strictly thermal. The thermal coupling is very short then it sends an electrical signal back to the gauge. It responds faster than your tach...I'm NOT kidding.

Remember to not stick it AFTER the turbo. The turbine inlet gives you a nice reading of all four cylinders BUT usually will read higher than at the head so it's a bit misleading. #3 runner is probably the best location.

You might want to look into getting some SPA gauges...I think they are pretty nice...however I have the 60mm P/H/W Greddy Silver $178 or so.

I have an Apex'i so I'm biased. Violater101, it's more likely your friend's Apex'i gauge was alright and the probe was messed up. It's extreamly long and if not placed properly it could easily rest against the wall of a manifold.

However I would recommend one with at least a peak hold function. Sux to have to take your eyes off the road at 100+ mph to look at a gauge. Warning is also nice.

Also, look into the TRE probes. They are the fastest responding and smallest one out there. Price went up on those to $45, but they are sweet. 1/8 NPT tap.

I would highly recommend a gauge with a warning light: i.e. the Greddy. On a road course, running down the straights at over 100 MPH, you are not staring at the gage, and you don't have to. BUT, if your temps hit your warning, that light comes on and it gets your attention. It will even grab your attention in broad daylight.

My next set of gauges will be SPA for oil pressure/temp, water temp/fuel. You don't want to look at them all the time, but the SPA's can be programmed to illuminate a warning light at any setpoint, getting your attention.

:thumb: Whatever gauge you get, get a TRE probe to go with it. They're awesome-- the gauge is only as good as the probe.

I just picked up an auto meter egt from machv. But today my buddy told me it doesn't read high enough and that the probe is slow. Has anyone else heard of this. I need to know if this is a good gauge or not. Its the sport/comp series.

I have been told by several people with the Autometer probe that it is slow to respond. And I just don't like gauges that max out at 1600. So for me, the Isspro EGT gauge (1800 deg. max) and a TRE probe fits the bill quite well.

I dunno about you, but I'm not trying to run my car near the ragged edge of tuning. 1600 at the top is plenty for me. Oh, and yes, the TRE probe is all that and a bag of chips.

which greddy did u go with?
so It came with the probe right? and hope its not the strap on probe thing neither.

I found a greddy 52mm EGT for $153 shipped, seems like a reasonable price, just doing some research before I get it.

this 1........
