I have a 90 Laser turbo fwd. I have the need for more power, of course, is it worth modding the fwd. I already get wheel hop and no traction above 4k in first gear with just an open filter. But i don't want to go through the hassle of selling it and finding a good condition awd. Will the front wheel drive be uncontrolable with a 16G, maybe not uncontrolable but will it be fun? will it hook up in 2nd gear, granted i have all supporting mods. i got some money coming in in clumps, should i force myself to save it for the awd, or spend it as it comes on the fwd? just curious what you all think on the subject.

thanks

YEA, it's like its own sport. Trying to keep traction, LOL. FWD's can be fun and with the right launch you can take off with little or no wheel spin. AWD are very nice for launching. but, FWD's can be fun to learn how to launch correctly. If you play around you can find the best way for you.

I like my FWD, 5-speed 90 Laser turbo, I ran a 15.1 with a full tank of gas, a passenger and no mods whatsoever. I think they are fine to mod, pull hard in higher gears also, not as much power loss from the crank to the wheels compared to AWD. But hey, do what makes ya happy. Jake

fwd are soooo nice. for one you can do smoke shows, the only good thing about the traction loss!!!! but from a roll even in second gear i lose traction, but in third gear running up a on ramp i can haul a$$!!! i love it when someone is riding my rear end and i just hammer it and just goooo like there is no end all the way around the ramp and shoot down the interstate like a rocket!!!! i have had my fwd 92gst stock up to 145mph, talk about impressive for a car that i spent only 3600$ on!! well i am really tipsy tonight, so better stop while im ahead...

i agree i went 140 with my car with no mods fwd are crazy cars they just dont get the repsect they should get cuz people who first drive them cant make them stop spinning so they say their no good to mod... they just dont kno how to drive

basically front wheel drive is not worth it unless u engage in burn-out contests. after a handful of mods, traction is at a loss, and unless u really know how to drive ur car, and what to expect when ur driving it, u might crash or break something.

That whole statement is bogus.. i love my gs-t.. and in most cases have no problems beating highly modded gsxs.. and if you want to "engage" in burnout conests, buy a honda...

"hey let me talk out of my ass a lil more"

My brother has a 90 laser that he has moded. And that car is fast as shit. I like my awd but he wouldn't even think about getting one. I can take him out of the whole, but he is a lot faster on the freeway. One thing you need it a dual stage boost controler. So you can launch at stock boost put it in second, flip the switch and open it up all the way.

amen brother... the DSBC was one of the best investments I ever made...

so basically all you FWD people would prefer a FWD over a AWD? i see it this way

Fwd - on rolls, top end
Awd - off the line, 1/4

and no, i dont think that FWD is not worth modding, every car is worth moding (exept honduhs), and when done right earns alot of respect.

when i started modding my fwd i didn't like it but that's me i like to be really push into the sit w/out burnouts, my buddy bought the gs-t from me and i drove it 3 days ago really fast and fun he's not the best driver in the world so he gets mad wheelspin though
i 3rd the dual boost contoler never had one but sounds like a good idea

If all you're doing is racing from a roll and going for top speed, then yeah, FWD is the way to go.
I got to the point where I could have upped the power more, but it already spins the tires up to 60 MPH, so what's the point? Plus the things I had to do to get it to hook up detracted from the daily livability, things like rigid motor mounts, really stiff rear springs, no weight or sound proofing in the back ( rear wheels locked up too easy). I even got the Dejon triple boost controller that hooks up to the tranny so I could set boost levels for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-5th gear. Worked great when tuned for slight wheelspin. But watching the boost gage read 11 psi in first gear got depressing. I also got tired of seeing old RWD musclecars get mid 12 1/4 mile times at 105 MPH, while I blazed through at 111 MPH and struggled to get a low 13.

I had my Laser since '94 and won't regret it. It's been a great daily driver in stock form. But since I've been modding, it's time for AWD. I bought a 92 Talon AWD last fall and am in the proces of switching mods. I wish I got it sooner, before I put so much time and $ into the FWD. One thing is for sure, after pulling my first 1.87 second 60' time I laughed out loud! and it was only a low 14 second run. So what! I hooked up for the first time ever and I loved it!

So keep in mind what you will use the car for, and try to guess how much power you think it'll have in a year. That should help you decide.

Main reason why I wanted a AWD, was to control wheel spin so I don't get pulled over by the cops. I know how much they love to give tickets for that.

It's fun when some one tries to cut in front of you and then u punch it spinning ur tires for a sec, then when u look in ur rear view mirror u see the car that tried to cut in front of u come out from a cloud of smoke and exhuast fumes :) Works best when it's cold out :)

So yeah it's best to get a AWD if you can find one and afford it otherwise FWDs can be cheap and fun too. Just keep it less than 30 over the max speed limit and you'll be ok.

I can't wait to upgrade my turbo it's going to be crazy! I highly recommend fixing up the suspension before more power though.

To me it seems like you get more bang for your bux if your cars is a FWD and a daily driver. Less parts, cheaper repair costs, especially when your making some serious power.

If your goin for 1/4 times though can't beat the AWD.

When you determine what your gonna use your car for, your gonna set it up for that purpose. Sure fwd is traction challenge, but that's why you make changes as you mod it. So i'd say if your gonna keep your fwd, for starters get the prothane motor mounts. You don't know how much it helps get rid of most of your wheel hop. Also an lsd. I have a quaife in mine & it made a HUGE difference. I got more traction when it rains now & it really helps pull you thru turns. There's nothing like watching both wheel spin & your actually moving forward, hehe. Third would be to change your tires for some good ones. Research comes into play on this one...

Good Luck & Happy Modding
Saber!...!...!

FWD Eclipses are fast, it all depend how good of a driver you are.

If you are mainly into drag racing or racing from a stop, save up and get an AWD. Otherwise, stick with the FWD.

"Another Congrats to Eric Dunlap for driving his FWD 2G DSM to another personal best of 11.8 @ 122 with the L2R on drag radial tires. No slicks here."

this was taken right off of AGP's web site and i think it pretty much speaks for itself...this is a guy here in tampa that has a high power fwd and pulls consistent sub 2.0 60ft times on drag radials...i don't think that particular run was sub 2.0 because his clutch is slipping pretty bad now, but you get the point...

I guess it really depends on what you want to use your car for. If you are going to the track on a reg. basis then you will probably be happier with an AWD.
If you are not getting a newer modle look at it this way, how I do.
Once you build more and more power, would you rather buy tires more or clutches, transfercases and rear ends?? Think the more traction you have then the more stress your driveline will have. Some of these cars are pushing 13 years now.
I think it takes a braver person to attack the challenge of a high HP FWD then just say screw it and get a AWD.
