ok my car makes 370whp and 310tq ,but i have a lot of time on my hands lately and feel like experimenting ,im running a bullseye 57 trim with a 3" intake,i wanna custom make an intake to go by the wheel for colder air,i know about the water and all thatand i know where to place it but ive done research and people have different things to say for cold air intakes on turbo cars, i just wanna know if im gonna be wasting my time? is anyone here running a cold air intake?

I'm using an FP intake so the filter is in the stock location. I cut a hole in the sheet metal under the filter and put in a duct to direct air from the stock side mount inlet up to the filter through the hole. I then made an aluminum air box to seal the filter from the rest of the engine bay. This lowered my intake temps to ambient and helped reduce instances of knock.

Yes, colder intake air is better. But water/meth injection is much more effective since it cools the charged air down after the turbo has heated it up. But starting with colder air into the turbo result in air that is not as hot coming out of it.

so there is a hp increase? how about boost spool up? does it get affected?

Personally I haven't noticed much increased spool, It is mostly a decrease in knock for me.

The general rule of thumb is:

Colder induction temps
Less restriction on the turbo by the intake pipe and filter
Less restriction on the turbo acting on the engine

This will gain you more volumetric efficiency (and more timing due to less knock), but a net loss in a streetable car.

I did this but it was at the same time as a lot of other pretty major changes so I can't comment on how it helped. There are plenty of people that say cold air intakes on turbo charged applications are worthless since the turbo heats it up anyways. However, I am happy with mine. Here are some pics, check out this thread for more pics and more info on the box I made. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/bolt-tech/395597-flow-same-air-filter-intercooler.html

I just got through doing the same thing. The problem was my IAT's and coolant temps where just too high. After moving the air filter in front of the tire there is a huge difference. These results are after a long drive and doing many 3rd gear pulls while tuning. I'm running a FPRed with E85 on 35lbs of boost on a 2.3.

Pre-moved filter:
Outside temp - 87 - 92*
IAT - up to 158*
Coolant temp - up to 225*

Post-moved filter:
Outside temp - 87 -92*
IAT - max was 120*
Coolant temp - 196*

Of course no good post is without pictures

I took a piece of 3" exhauset cut, bend, and welded it together so there are no couplers. I didn't have time to grind all the welds down and get her painted up. After thinking about it I think I'm going to heat wrap all of the intake and headers so it's not too big of a deal. I am also going to seal in the filter area and see what that will do.

Here is an old shot of the air box I made. I have updated it a bit since the FP intake moved the filter but I don't have any pictures handy.

This isn't the best picture, but you can see the hole I cut below the air filter.

Nice now did you see any power change and does the gas mileage get worse, because I'm also on e85

To be honest I have never run e85 without this intake setup. I did this when the car was only on 91 and it helped with knock above 20psi from my 16G. I did not notice any change in my mileage.

With the e85 this might not even matter since my car almost never knocks on it anyway.

How about boost response?

I didn't do back to back dyno pulls or anything. If it made a difference in boost response it wasn't anything more than a few hundred RPM. If it did help it wasn't enough to make the car feel very different. As a whole at the time I did it my 1/4 mile time in the summer in CA dropped from 13.2 to 13.0 mostly due to more timing on the top end.
