RRRRrrrr... ok, here is the deal... My car has had a prob with the rear end, like when I back up and cut the wheel to the left or right there is a popping noise... I think it is the center diff, but as far as I am concerned, it is kinda on the back burner now....

I took my car to a mechanic to take a look at it... and asked him to tighten my belts since they had decided to start squeeking a day or two before... well... to make a long story short, he told me that when he went to do the belts, he said that my timing belt was too loose and it needed to be tightened... I said, sure, whatever , just make it work... well... I get another call from him saying that the reason it was broke was because the pullies that go to the oil pump (and another one I cant remember) were bad and they were wobbling.. and the tensioner was bad... so they all needed to be replaced... ok, whatever... just fix it....

He finally calls me to tell me the car is done... so I go up there.. and first off ask him what the deal is with my tranny.. well... he said he didnt look at it because he wasnt really a transmission guy and that i should go see the guy down the street... but he said he checked the fluid in it and it seemed fine... sigh.. whatever... well.. he then told me that I should be excited that he didnt have to replace the tensioner afterall! I said, well, that is good... he said 'yeah, and its a good thing since they sent me the wrong part!'...... I said.....'uhh, yeah'... so I give him my $375 and Im on my way.

So i get in my car, all excited since I have been driving my SOHC Saturn for like 5 or 6 days... well... I pull out of the place and think... something just isnt right... well... I get up to about 2500 rpms and notice that my the tranny just seems REALLY loud!! like it is going to blow up!! then I notice my speedo isnt working...... hmmm... so I turn around and go back to the place and tell him... well... he said that he hadnt messed with anything on the transmission so that couldnt have been his fault... my car is out of alignment and that must the the problem with that (that is what he said) ... as far as the speedo... he said, well... it worked when I test drove it! ... I said.. well... I didnt just drive out of the parking lot and unplug something so that I could come back here and complain about something....

So he digs around in the engine bay for a few minutes and finds that the speedo plug had come halfway out of the engine and wasnt making a connection... he showed me where it was "in case it happens again"... (Ill get to that in a sec).... so anyway.. Im kinda pissed but think that maybe it is just because I havent drove the car in a few days and Im just not used to the way it feels now...

So the ride home... I get about a mile down the road with the tranny just screaming away (and no, I wasnt hauling ass)... and I decide to make sure the boost is still ok and all... so I get on it a little and it boosts right up to 15lbs where i have it set... yay! after about a second and a half of 15 lbs I hear this sound like all the air rushing out.. and right about then I thought I had blown a piece of intercooler piping off.. so I pull over to look........ everything seems find.... hmm.... well... I get back in and it boosts.. and it does it again... and notice that my vacuume is reading like 28 or 29in/hg.... hmm.. it usually isnt more than 21...

well now I am getting pissed... I also noticed blue smoke coming out of my exhaust in puffs today so I take it back on my lunch break.. well.. I talked to the front desk lady and tell her what is going on and she goes in the back to talk to him... I can hear him say (more of a shout) that 'i already told him there is nothing else I can do for him'... a few minutes later she comes back out and says that he is busy with another car right now, can I leave it and he will take it all back apart tomorrow and recheck the timing on the oil pump..... ?!! what?! I just want my freakin CAR to work.. I dont care how you fix it!! RRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So what do you guys think I should do... just forget this guy and find someone else, (and repay someone to fix all of this) or make him fix it since he already has my money?!? I just dont know what to do...RRRRrrrr  Fawk you Neil!!!!!!!! (the mechanic)

Please help guys, Im freaking out here!!!!!!!!

I would get the car away from him ASAP. How many miles on the car? Are you sure the popping noise isn’t coming from a ball joint? Have your lower A arms been replaced? Is it shifting ok? Run a compression test and hook up a timing light to be sure.

105,000 miles on it..im not sure about the ball joint, I know the lower A arms havent been replaced... the shifting WAS great, and still goes into gear and everything, but it vibrates with the rest of the car.... and there is kind of a "whiiiiirrrrrr" noise when I let off the throttle... I know squat about compression tests and timing lights :) If I could find someone in the jax area to give me a hand...........

Hey Atari,
Here's my ideas on what is going on with you car, "just ideas"... Since you already payed him, I would try to get him to fix what he screwed up, the only problem with that is if he already messed up the first time around he might do worse the next time. From what it sounds like to me... If your "tranny vibration" wasnt there before you took it to the mechanic and he was messing with the timing belt, it seems like he got the timing of the balancing shaft a tooth or more off. If your balancing shafts arent right, then they can give you the illusion of something being wrong with your tranny. If he did that part wrong I would be worried what else is done incorectly also.

On your popping noise... If its just a popping or clicking noise when your turning it souns to be more like a CV joint gone bad than a Center diff. If when you are making a full turn and your tires bind and chirp against each other then I would believe it to be the Center diff.

Like I said these are just ideas to help you out, it is really hard to pin point something without actually seeing it or hearing it.

Good luck!!

man... good luck with your car - i know the hells you are in with a mechanic you don't know personally and appears to be either ripping you off or screwing something up and claiming ignorance or 'no, YOU did it'... its very frustrating.

if you have the cash, i'd take it to the dealership and have them check out the condition of your timing (it costs $80 here in south florida to have the dealership check anything out - might be more or less where you are). anyway - if they find something wrong with it have them write up what is wrong and bring that write-up to the guy who screwed it up and get your money back and get the dealership to do it right. either that or find someone you trust to look @ it that can give you a written statement of what is wrong.

i'm sorry to make a generalization about anyone or anything but IMO mechanics, for all i've seen them for, are a bunch of con and rip-off artists. i've never had a good experience with any mechanic - friend or not and the last time i took my car to a 'friend' he cost me 2,500 in damage (had to get a rebuilt tranny) and he told me straight out 'i'm not going to help you with any of it - you don't have any proof that i ever touched your car'.

anyway - like i said - good luck man - hope it works out

Look into whether his business is part of the local Better Business Bureau and threaten to take action through them (if possible). I know here in Cali, that will wake just about any business up into working with you to solve problems.

Sorry to hear your tale of woe, Atari.

To help cover your claims, some advice - make sure you have provided the mechanic with a chance to repair the problem. If you don't his defense will be that you didn't provide a chance to fix things. So, go back and calmly explain the car is running strangely and that you believe (don't get all half cocked and say "its all your fault") that the reason the car isn't running well could be connected to the last repair job.

If he says that nothing is wrong, won't even take a look at it, etc.....then calmly let him know that you will have someone else take a look at things.

Mechanics can tell if something has been messed with - ask to see some evidence of it.

Good luck

Kyle

In most cases repair shops know nothing about our cars. When I first got my car I had the thermostat replaced, the guy had to undo the UICP to do it!?!?!? So he didn't hook it back up. I got in it and Whoosh baam! SOB MF'r. So I look and see it unhooked. I almost killed him. I got my cash back!

HEY ATARI! SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR RIDE
I'M IN JAX,FL TOO
SOUND LIKE THE ORIGINAL PROB WAS NEVER FIXED BUT THEY TRIED 2 MAKE SOME BUX ON YA AND DID SOME UNNECESSARY WORK ON UR CAR. AT THIS POINT, I WOULD SPEND $50 BUCK AT MITSUBISHI AND LET THEM KNOW IN DETAIL WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOUR CAR. GET A QUOTE FROM MITSU SHOP AND EITHER GO BACK TO THE SHOP TO GET UR CAR REFIXED OR THE SHOP COULD PAY MITSU TO DO THE REPAIR(MOST LIKELY WILL NOT HAPPEN). THE LOCAL SHOP MIGHT CHARGE U IF THEY NEED TO ORDER ADDTL PARTS BUT SHOULD NOT CHARGE U LABOR. IF THEY ARE A REPUTABLE SHOP, THEN THEY WILL ACCEPT, IF NOT, THEN YOU HAVE TO FILE A LAWSUIT. GET THE MECHANIC AND THE MANAGER'S NAME. PS, IF YOU PAID WITH VISA/MASTERCARD AND LESS THAN 60 DAYS, CALL THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE # ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD TO DISPUTE THE CHARGE ASAP. THIS WAY, YOU WILL GET A CONDITIONAL CREDIT ON YOUR CARD(NO FINANCE CHARGE) WHILE YOUR STILL GETTIN YOUR CAR FIXED. HOPE THIS HELPS. BY THE WAY, WHICH MECHANIC SHOP WAS IT?

OP BABY!

What kind of shop is this? Like a real mechanics shop or some backyard mechanic? I would stay away from there. Is this guy doing the work the only mechanic there?

It was a real shop... sigh... but its all over with now... final outcome? engine is ok, turbo... well... turbo is dead! :( but either way, it is a good excuse to do some more mods... Thanx for all the help guys... and yes, I am filing a report with the better buisness bureau... its gunna be a load of paperwork, but i think it will be worth it!

I get this same saound comming from my rear end, a few ping noises but only when starting going forwayrd or backwards and moast while turning. Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if there is ANY tranny fluid in it??? (the loud screaming of the transmition could be cause the dick drained some of the oil when he checked it...
