:dsm: I bought a '90 Talon AWD From my friend. The car has 54,000 miles on it but it was a 12second car, so i'm concerned about how the transfer case, trans, and rear end are gunna be holding up. When i bought the car from him it was in the shop getting the bottom and top end rebuilt (basicly stock) because he blew the head gasket and i think that the head was cracked...well now the car has a nice engine, and the stock 14B has no shaft play. So my question is, what kind of engine break in should i do once it's started from day one, and how should i go about testing/ or inspecting my other critical components. Thanks for your input... when the car leaves the shop it will have: 2.5" catback and maybe a UICP and a blitz BOV. Should i have problems with the Blitz BOV concidering it vents to the atmosphere? <Gooberlog>:dsm:

drive it easy for a 1000 miles. after that slowly start revving it higher til you get to redline. or just do what some guys say and break it in how your gonna drive it.

For the furst like 3000 miles madke shure to use regular oil. not syntec. Your rinigs wont seal rigth if you don't. Also did you start the engine yet? You might want to prime the oil puymp so you don't dry start. Change the oil at 500miles, then 1000 miles then 3000 miles if not more often.

As far as the ventiung to the atmosphere thing, look around because there is a ton of stuff on tiiiiis topic. It seems like on some cars it runs fine (my frineds) but on others it can cause really mesed up idle etc. Just kind of depends how your car reacts too it.c

Have fun wiht the new engine!

No i have not started it yet but i have heard that i should, remove the fuel pump relay or something else, and then crank the engine over, so it primes the engine and doesn't start dry, and also to get some REGULAR oil to the turbo. Thanks for the response any others are more than welcome.

you really should prime the pump before you start the car...here's a sure fire way of doing so:

before you connect your injectors and plug wires, get in the car and turn the ignition to the on position...you will notice that your dummy light for oil pressure will be on...start turning the engine over until the light goes off...should take between 15-30 sec's depending on whether or not you packed the pump...when the light goes off, the pump is primed...

just about everybody has their own views about how you should properly break in a motor, here's mine:

after you first start the car, let it idle until it comes up to normal operating temp...after that change the oil...i recommend changing the oil every 500 miles after that until you reach the 1500 mile mark...i wouldn't switch to synthetic until about 3000 miles...

hope this helps some...
