OK,
Im ready to buy a Cat Back Muffler, but a friend of mine just got pulled over because his exhaust was too loud!(he got a warning) So, I did some research and in New Hampshire according to inspection laws we cannot get a larger diameter exhaust and cannot get a louder exhaust. It will result in a $43.20 ticket plus its on your record.

So my question is how many of you were pulled over and actually got a ticket in NH? Im wondering if they really enforce this law.

Im looking at the Apexi N1 because it has a silencer is this a good choice?
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

just a suggestion if they are that strict, gut your cat, it will still be there technically, and get bigger pipping with a silencer on it and then a muffler from and exhaust shop like a mellowtone or a turbo muffler... My opinion they arent extremly loud but still have a deep rumble to them

I wouldnt worry about it. Just dont hammer on it when you know there are police around. Get your 50 state legal papers that come with the exhaust. They try the same #### here in VA. If they give you a ticket go to court and bring your papers. NH is not one of the states that it is illegal. If it fits within the same parameters as the factory exhaust it should be fine. I think what they refer to is side-exit type, non muffled etc..
Just keep your papers with you and if anything you'll get just a warning.
My cousin got about 50 warnings from MT Vernon to Nashua.. no big deal.

I also live in VA and having 50 state legal papers are a joke. Each State has a right to pass Laws that are more strict than what the Federal Govt requires(they can't pass something less, just more strict). To add more fuel to the fire..... Each city or town can pass even more strict regulations than the State has.
Your only hope carrying the papers is that someone falls for it. If the Officer knows his city/state codes and he doesn't want to give a warning, I see a ticket in your future.
If anyone wants to read VA Code for this, let me know. I have it right here. After reading it you will see that almost any after market exhaust is illegal here.

Here is how they can give a ticket :( in NH still don't know anyone who as gotten one only warnings so far. I know portsmouth actually has a certain day they go out just to give these tickets.

266:59 Muffler; Prevention of Noise. –
I. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler as defined in RSA 259:66, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a way.
II. The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes, smoke, flame, gas, oil or fuel residue.
III. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in any manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted above that emitted by the original muffler installed in the vehicle and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section.

”noise emitted above that emitted by the original muffler installed in the vehicle
and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section”

The problem is that they do not have official regulations to tell them what it is supposed to be from the factory (and it has to be official). If they can get a 100% stock DSM and put next to your car, they might be able to prove it. Otherwise, it is not that simple…

“Get your 50 state legal papers that come with the exhaust. “

OK, lets it try it one more time... “50 state legal” is referring to emissions controls it has NOTHING to do with noise! Each state or even each county can set their own laws, FEDs are not controlling it.

Here's VA's State Code:
46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.--No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particuliar vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.
The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle throught which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block. Chanbered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

I understand that you're talking about another State but since someone brought up VA.... Plus it will show that many States have similiar codes. VA's is pretty strict.

Most states have that law...Illinois does but 99% of the time you won't get messed with unless there is a total crackdown or you were doing something stupid.....or I guess if the cop don't like your car!

All I can say is what about harley's and trucks. We are being discriminated against because of our choice of vehicle's? I've never heard a harley or truck being pulled over because of noise, and they always have modified exhausts.

A harley drives by me it vibrates my entire car and my body.

Must be a way to fight this.
Any lawyers out there who are also dsm lovers?

I'm still going to get an exhaust and hope I dont get bugged.

FYI
The cop who pulled my friend over and gave a warning to suggested he put his original exhaust back on. Ya right after spending all that money!

Sorry its choppy just pissed.
Lata 97 Talon TSI FWD so far 14.7 1/4mile once the exhaust is on hopefully closer to 13's.

Don't even think about coming into Newmarket. I have been pulled over 4 times for my Apexi exhaust. The first three times, they told me that it couldn't be any louder than stock, so I put the silencer in. The last time, They said any "modified" exhaust was illeagal. They can't even get their story strait. The cops here don't have anything better to do than pull people over for so called "violations". I also reregistered my car in Maine so the cops here can't say sh*t. Most cops won't give you a hard time about the exhaust as long as your not being an ass.
