Okay. I've had this car for like... gotta be like 6 months now. To this day I have not found out, FOR CERTAIN what turbo this is. I've asked couple people from other forums individually, but theyre puzzled too.

Previous owner called it a "Turbonetics TO4R." Did a little searching and found that the TO4R is actually by HKS. Found out that the maximum boost for these turbos = about 25psi. ALllllso found out that these turbos are used on 600hp SUPRAS, (www.to4r.com) therefore it probably isnt the best choice for my little i4... Makes sense, the owner tells me that his friends did all the tuning (supra owners) .. His goal for the car was to keep up/beat them (heh) ... HOWEVER the turbo got there I really don't care..

What I would really like to know is... WHAT IS IT??? Is this really a to4r?? It spools/"kicks in" so to speak around 3,800 rpm. Pretty late.

I have already emailed the guys at to4r.com, so far no replies. =-\

Here are some pictures, as well as a movie (maybe sound will hep?)::

oh i should probably add....

The reason I doubt that it really IS a to4r = the shaping of the compressor housing... I've seen one version with a DIVIDER in the center, one version with a very rectanglish look, while mine is like a relaxed rectangle....

Should I even worry about it? Do I need to think in terms of "how much boost" it can put out or is it just how much HP? Either way it would still help to know. I'm about a day away from the car being done, after a break in it will be ready to be tuned and boost increased significantly...!! (can't wait..!!)

About the only thing you can tell for sure is the compressor housing is Turbonetics. It's a piece of crap. Send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly. I'll even give you a 16G to replace it for your troubles.

*enormous sigh of relief*

but then WTF IS IT!?!!?

I've ph33red to ask for a while jus because someones gonna say "OMG YOU GOT RIPPED OFF!"

but at the same time i do need to know what I can expect from this thing... !!!!!

hehe, I was just screwing with you man. It's definately not a piece of crap, it looks rather expensive.

My advice is take it to a turbo shop locally. They can pull off the compressor housing and tell you what kinda wheel it has hopefully. My guess from the size, shape, and your description of its spool time makes me think it can produce CFM and power to part the sea. Maybe you should think about e-mailing Turbonetics a picture of it and ask them just what housing it is? Maybe they can shine some light on it. Good luck. And don't forget I offered to swap you turbos.

Ha.

Iono. There aren't many options as far as shops that I'd trust to identify. I'll probably use the link i dropped up ^^ there.... and then yeah prolly email turbonetics...

This is just one of the many reasons why you DONT buy an already-flipped car... Great deal tho.. couldnt pass up...

Well, it looks quite similar to the T3/T4 I have sitting in my bedroom. It does look like a T3 exhaust housing with a a standard T4 compressor housing. Could you get a better shot of the exhaust housing? Does it have a space for an internal gate and then a 5 bolt flange for the downpipe? It really looks like a T3/T4 to me, though.

Hmm. Those are the BEST pics I have ATM but I'll take more when I get the car back outta shop.

goddam

only email addy i could find on turbonetics' website = [email protected] and it dun wark. :(

guess il call.. heh.

ok it IS 5 bolt, no new pics yet .. . (car is still FUBAR thanks to retard mechanic)

Star supplies a 46 trim garrett t04 wheel in their turbos if that is what is is. (Or they used to last I checked.)

All you have to do is disassemble and measure the inducer/exducer sizes for the comp wheel. Then compare to a chart. Boom! You know what you have.

You can rest assured its not a T04R. The best anyone can tell you from your pics is it's a t3/t4 of some sort made by turbonetics. As Jayntguru said you need wheel sizes to know anymore. Also the exhaust (turbine) housing will have a .xx number stamped or cast on it somewhere. That means alot as well. It will be something like .63 or.84, etc.

####. well. I'll get a better look as soon as car is back... I havent really SEEN any stampings other than the <t> logo.

where would the stamp probably be?

Knowing simply that its "some sort" of t3/t4, is it sufficient for my plans? (15/20psi)

so can I just unbolt the back plating and remove the compressor housing, and measure the wheel (somehow..?)

Is there some risk of putting the turbo back together incorrectly/torqued improperly?

Gah I wish i could think of a shop that'd just do this for me...

New pics.
