My friend showed me this site: http://tjn115.tripod.com/icweb.htm
He said the guy was selling those FMICs for something like $300. It's short and not very think, but it sure is wide.

I was wondering if something like this would do a sufficient job cooling a big 16g.

Save your pennies until you can do it "right". People waste more money because they dont have the $$ then they would if they just bought the right product in the first place.

The site has a problem with the bandwith. I would also say save your money and buy a complete kit. There is alot more to a FMIC then just an IC. Look around, you may be able to find a used FMIC complete.

So, umm.. I asked if it was any good, not tips on buying inexpensive parts.

How much of this are we going to have to spoon feed to you? No its not worth the price. Save your pennies for something that is worth it.

actually... I'm going to have to disagree with rdrkt and cucumber. Don't take it the wrong way though, I know jack about endtank design and pressure drop as compared to, for example, rdrkt, but I always favor custom jobs over mass produced incorporation jobs. I'm sure Apexi (generally the most tried and true intercooler) does a pretty good job on their intercoolers, but from the pictures I saw on that website it looked like that individual did a quality job on the welds on the endtanks. If I were you, I'd contact him and see if you could contact a few of his previous customers to see what kind of performance gains they got using his intercoolers. Then do a little research on here about the tried and true intercoolers... do a little comparison and make the decision yourself. Its probably just me, but I generally trust individuals that do custom jobs more than big corporations. Little businesses have a lot more to lose than, say, apexi. And usually they're willing to work with you on fixing the little glitches that come along. I'm partial, I know. Just my .02.

Oh... and for a big16g... yeah I'd say the size of that intercooler would do a pretty good job.

BryanK: While that may be your prerogative you still can’t beat a Spearco 216 core with a stick. Even the core he is selling is more than likely a cut down Spearco core. For the money I would just weld on bigger inlet/outlets on the stock sidemount and maybe take the plastic off that protects the SMIC. Is it worth 300 bucks plus piping to be able to run 3-4 more lbs of boost a bit more efficently?

See if you can find a 221 core. I'm sure you could get it for $400 ish and that is a GREAT core and it should last you through just about any turbo you get.

there are some very good cores out there, you just have to find them

sometimes people are hurting for money. sometimes it just trying to get a name out.

i personally got a fmic for my car for the low.
29w 5h 5d

good area, low drop. even has the turbonetics seal of approval.

too big for a 14b? probably. b16p, probably not.

its YOUR car, you do what you want.

Oh hell yeah, rdrkt... I'm not disputing that a nice spearco will do the job incredibly well, I was just saying that for $300 it looks like he does a pretty quality job on his intercoolers. Obviously you get what you pay for, and while a spearco 216 properly assembled will do the job for just about any turbo out there, VHP777 is simply looking for a big16G, so he's not in need of a huge one. Just some input... yes, the spearco will do a better job any day of the week, but if you're strapped for cash, and his previous customers are happy, $300 is gonna be pretty tough to beat.

I personally would invest my money into a fmic that has been PROVEN. Do it right the first time! I'm not trying to knock that guy or anything, it's just better to be safe than sorry IMHO. Save your money a little longer. I myself have a ported Big28 and I'm going with a Big GReddy fmic. I know it's not the best, but I do know that it will be all the fmic I will ever need, even if I do decide to go to a FP green or similar size turbo. Good luck!!
