Removing step between manifold and turbo. Bad idea?

Has anyone removed the ring between their turbo and exhaust manifold and then ported both sides, removing the step that the ring sits in? Would this be a bad idea?

This is a good Idea. This is the standard porting for any turbo. Especially when you upgrade. With the t-too small I'm curious to see what gains you get. Normally the gains would be faster spool and more top end.

I see in your profile you have a 16g. When I ported mine this way I gained about 400 rpm sooner spool and more top end.

Can you post some pics of the "step" and "ring". Im not sure what you are talking about. But when I do my 1g head/intake swap I plan to port the manifolds etc so I want to be sure to do this also.

the mani. and turbo each have a larger area cut out on them (step) where they mate. a steel ring fits in this groove to help align the turbo to the mani for easier assembly. good for quick assembly; bad for smooth airflow

when porting out your mani isnt just doing the step and smoothing out the runners a little bit all you need? There is no other grinding beside removing the step right?

Sorry, Idont have any pics to post for an example. I ported the ex. manifold today. I took the step out and also opened up the runners a bit. Grinding the step out of the turbo was a bit tricky because of the cone shape of the housing. It took the better part of the day to complete, but everything turned out really nice. Cant wait to get my engine bilt this week and try everything out.
