How do I identify shaft play?

Ok, so I got a used Super 16G, how do I identify shaft play, what is it, and how does it affect operation of the turbo? Anyone is free to reply with any comment: help, further questions, flames, whatever.

stick your finger in the compressor housing. the car can be on or off it doesn't matter to me much and move the shaft if you can that's a bad thing.

In which direction, pushing in. pulling out. or rotate funny? And how bad. does a little shaft play means its unusable or just needs a rebuild.

all the 16g's i felt had about 3/8-1/2" side to side play no back and forth

So, its ok if it moves side to side alittle bit? Cause this things is is moving maybe an 1/16 of inch from the axis, which is like an 1/8 side to side.

If it is only moving 1/16th of an inch on a Super 16g, then you are in great shape How much are you getting it for?

It had an elbow for the 2g's and the wastegate was welded shut, but still a D8MN good price Also does anyone know where I can get the wastegate acuator? Can I use the one from my 14b?

exactly... preferable when the car is OFF though.... just try and move the fins.. there really shouldn't move at all. but especially back and forth.... that means that your #@%#@%#@%#@% is toast if it does!

Take your turbo & set ot on a table . Put your ear close to the compressor housing outllet . Take your index & thumb fingers & GENTLY
press the shaft to the side to see shaft play , while GENTLY PRESSING ,
spin the shaft @ the same time & see if you here a quick metalic "ching , ching , ching, " sound while you are GENTLY pressing & spinning at the
same time . This will help you determine if the compressor wheel is making contact with the compressor housing or not when shaft play is not so evident .

Pretty much every turbo has a little shaft play thats normal... but it should only move a lil bit.
