Anyone know a good 1.5 amp unswitched power source somewhere near the glove box? I have equipment to install in the car and am looking for power. I don't have a radio anymore, is there anything in the radio harness that would fit my needs?

The yellow wire in the radio harness is power. You can also unplug the bulb wire under the cig lighter and use that as a power source. Make sure you have a 1.5amp fuse hooked up inline to the equipment you are installing.

Happen to know what the radio harness wire is fused for? My equipment is actually fused at 2 or 3 amps (I forget right now), but unless it shorts out, I'll see a max 1.5amp draw :)

Look at the amp rating on the "radio" fuse in the fuse box. :sneaky:

Well, OK, that sounds like a good idea! :)

Does ALL the radio power come through that one fuse? I know that "some" power must be supplied when the car is off, or the radio would lose it's memory. However, the radio is off automatically when the car is off. I just want to make sure that wherever I hook into it's an "always on" source (my equipment needs power at all times) and that I don't exceed the available power.

Specifically, my concern is that the "memory/always on" power may be a very low current circuit (perhaps too low for me) separate from the radio main power (which would be more than sufficient for my needs). Where's the logic for the "OK for radio to be on" located? Is it in the radio itself (radio has an input for "car running, OK to allow power on) and there's only one main power feed? If so, that'd be perfect! :)

The radio fuse should be for constant power. I assumed the device you are installing had a on/off switch. If not, you can install a ground switch. I have no idea where the power for the "memory" wire comes from. The Haynes manual should have a wiring schematic in the back of the book, I moved to another apartment and now I can't find it.

Yes, the equipment has a built-in power switch. Normally it would be left off as it's only for special events, but during events it needs to be on. Even during portions of events when the car may just be parked and shut off. Hopefully I'll get a chance later this week to go out there and check out the wire you recommended.

Thanks!

Turns out, it's the red wire on mine... I have 2 yellow wires, heavy gauge, and dead. Perhaps speakers? Dunno, anyways, there's 22 gauge red wire that's always on. Radio is a 10amp fuse, so that matches up well with the 22 gauge wire (according to Mitsubishi anyways... They put 15amps on 20 gauge wiring elsewhere in the car! I personally would not run 15 amps on anything smaller than 18 gauge, prefereably 16!).

Cut the red wire out of the harness, spliced in my power, wrapped everything up real good, routed wires, and we've got power! :)

Thanks!
