i bought a k&n breather filter to put on my pcv hose so oil doesnt collect in the intake. so of course in like a week the filter went from red to black (oil). is this something i have to clean every week or it doesnt matter how much oil collects in the filter. thanks

Mine didn't turn black in a week. No I just have a hose the runs down and deposits the gunk on the ground

Same here, mine took awhile to turn black, well brown more than anything. if your took like a week or even less than that i am thinking you might have a bit of a blow-by issue. maybe not major but you have something thats letting you know that you have one. all cars have some sort of it, jsut some more than others.

is blow by bad? doesn't that just mean your running to much boost or poor gaskets?

Blow by is jsut caused by pressure pasing through the pistons rings i belive. If it you really think it is a problem pull the plugs and check the compression on it. You have a 2G, my compression numbers were from left to right 175,169,169,169, all the guys on here said those were great. if your numbers are anywhere close to that i really wouldnt worry about a blowby issue. What happens when you build more boost is crankcase pressure builds up and well if you have a lil blowby it will send out the nipple on your valve cover along with a lil oil and feed it back into the intake. Putting a breather on it catches the oil and lets the pressure vent to the Atmos and keeps the oil out of your intake track. If you pulled the UIC off of your TB you would probly see a bit of oil lining the bottom of it. I DID. Thats why i installed a catch can and cleaned all that out. If you get a UIC pipe from like RRE or something or so later on dump some alchohol or gas into your intercooler and shake it around and get all the oily film out of it. it will make it flow better and cool better more performance if you are interested in that. glad to help. later:thumb:

Yep, that's exactly how I am doing mine now. I started with just putting a fuel filter in-line and still connecting the breather hose to the intake, but then I stopped doing that since a little oil still does get by the filter. I also have my PCV hose dumping to the ground as well.

It's fram fuel filter.

If I felt like searching I could dig up the link to the vfaq on dsmtalk

Do you have your hose still routed back into the intake? I got to wondering why I was still doing that, so I unhooked the hose, plugged the intake hole and just ran the hose down to the underside of the car. So far it's running fine and now there's absolutely no chance of any blowby getting into the intake, plus I don't have to keep changing the filter. I figure that even if this is already-metered air (I'm not sure if it is, somebody please enlighten me if you want), it's not enough to alter the A/F ratio too much.

but, if you dont have your hose running backinto the intake, you dont really need the filter? or is it just one of those things thats cheap enough that you mgiht as well get it just for the hell of it, cause it cant hurt anything anyway
