Hello everyone. Just got a 1990 plymouith laser RS turbo with 90000km or 56000 miles. Have done all free mods, boost gauge and air valve on wastegate line. Running 15 psi boost.

Question. Remove balance shaft or not? What are the opinions?

Thanks

maybe it's my ignorance or lack of knowledge that makes me post to this... but doesn't removing the balance shaft cause a little more vibration in the car? perhaps this is the harmonic dampener? moving right along... how much hp could one expect to gain without the balance shaft?

The engine balance will not change. The balance shafts counter act against the normal vibrations of the 4 cyl. engine. Ive read in forums about the before and after effects. Some people have said their engne felt the same and some said their engine seemed to vibrate more. Any vibration you start to feel after removing them was already there, you just couldn't feel it because the balance shafts were doing there job. From what I've heard and read, it's not an easy job to do with the engine in the vehicle.

Very true, but IMO, its well worth it. I wouldnt go and do it immediately or anythign if your worried about the belt braking or something. Wait until you do a clutch or until your car is going to be down for a while. I know its not a big issue of them braking but it has happened and will fugg sh!t up if it does. Kits are like 50$, and as mentioned above, it will increase power oil pressure and you wont have worries of it breaking. Barely any vibration is noticed anyway, and if thats a concern then WTF ar you doing driving a dsm. vibrations rule!! I got BS eliminator, prothane mounts and cams and I want more vibration OMG

I don't have a problem with vibration either, I was just trying to give an informed answer to the question so he/she could make an informed choice about it.

no no no, i wasnt directing anythign towards anyone. Just trying to say that that shouldnt really be a factor in decision. Lots of people are scaird of it cause they think that it will shake like crazy.... sorry I shouldve cleared it up bettter...

I have prothane motor mounts and no balance shafts. Yes the car vibrates pretty bad at idle and when cruising it's barely noticeable, until I look in the rearview mirror, all I see is a blur. Powerwise, I can't really tell because I went from mild to wild. When I had the balance shafts my only mods where a boost controller and a full exhaust, now I have a 20G and everything else to back it up.

OK, then can we still be friends?:D

Did you do it yourself or had it done? How long did it take and what was required to do it?

-The motor doesn't vibrate more, you just feel more of the vibration, I also have solid motor mounts, at idle, I feel kind of more vibration then my 01 chevy p/u, but it's not that bad.

Yes I did it myself with the motor out of the car and it took about 35minutes. (after all the sh!t was off)

i did it on my cyclone, you can sometimes feel the vibration more, but you can counteract that by turning the bass up and you will never notice = )
