I need help. I have a HKS external wastegate w/ open dump tube that I want to put on my 16G. How do I make the transition from an Internal wastegate to an external wastegate setup on my 16G? Please respond FAST!

Thanks,

Sean

If u put the wastegate on the manifold
then you need to weld the flapper shut

If u put the wastegate on the O2 housing
then you need to remove the flapper and possible port the hole bigger, but not 100% necessary. I just removed the actuator and use something to hold the flapper 100% open, that works also. Of course removing it completely will give better flow in the passage.

Thanks Jermey!!! Do you have any pictures of your engine so I can take a closer look at it?

What would happen if I removed the flapper, but the wastegate is welded onto manifold?

Thanks,

Sean

If you have a manifold setup you'll need to block the flapper's passage or you'll get low or no boost at all.

The cheapest way is to just use a wire to tie the flapper shut with a wire after you removed the actuator, if you don't want to weld it.

I mounted mine on the O2 though.

I hope you'll understand how the wastegate works and difference between internal, external, manifold and O2 mount before beginning this upgrade, 16g works really well with the internal wastegate in general.

Not to sound like a newb or anything, but couldn't you just disconnect the vacuum line that runs to the wastegate flapper actuator, and run it to the external? The vacuum line being the one that comes usually out of the compressor outlet pipe, into the boost controller, then out to the wastegate...

The problem is at high boost (exhaust flow), the flapper gets blown open if you don't weld or secure it, regardless of whether you removed the BC mechanism.
