Does anyone know if, on a 1g, the thermostatic switch at the bottom of the radiator is connected in any way to the ECU?

There are two wires going to this switch that I assume close when it reaches a certain temperature, kicking on the main fan.

Can I splice, not cut, into this switch and run the wire to a switch, instead of using the vfaq way of splicing into the relay in the back on the engine bay?

This way, it would seem the fans would run normally because it's just a splice, but I would be able to turn the fan on when needed, like in the pits or during a road race situation.
Also, the fan would work like stock when not closed.

Does anyone know if this affects the ECU in any way?

The temp sensor located at the bottom of the radiator plays no roll in the ECU, you can run a switch to it with no ill effects.

People do this, right?
I've searched here and NABR, but all the posts regarding it are devoted to diangnosing if it works.

This seems too obvious to not have been done before.

It seems like this would be an excellent way to cool a car down before shut down as well.
The fan blows right onto the oil lines and turbo housing.

The method outlined in the 1G Fan Relay VFAQ also works the way you describe. When the switch is on the fans are on, and when the switch is off the fans return to normal function. The only problem with installing a jumper switch in the relay is that the fans can be left on when the car is off, draining the battery.

The other problem is that is also turns the a/c on if you still have it. I just did the vfaq way of the fan switch and indeed the a/c does come on along with the fans. I have been trying to think of others ways to get around this and I think your idea will work. Maybe it was just too obvious and many people over looked it, like me. :)

Has anyone ever done this method before?

If the AC turns on, then you might have the wrong terminals.

OK I just checked my car. The AC relay is the middle relay, it's round and silver. It's labeled on the lid, so there should be no confusion there. The jumper wires should be hooked up to the two terminals that are closest to the firewall.
