whats up guys,
I want to do a 6 bolt swap but since I live in CA I was wondering if it would make a difference in passing a smog test?

If the engine is older than your car, most likely you will not pass visual. The technician will run numbers of your chassis and your engine and if the 6-bolt block is older, he will fail you. It does not matter if it is rebuilt or not, their reason is OLDER ENGINE=MORE SMOG.

Yeah, if you install a newer motor on an older car, its legal and it's illegal if you install a 6 bolt in a newer car.

Also, is there a difference in the visuals between a 7 bolt 2g and 6 bolt 2g? I'm thinking that they are pretty similar and that almost anyy smog tester won't know the difference. I'm not sure on this though because I don't know what a 6 bolt 2g looks like.

It don't look differnt...usally if you do it right you can hide the 1g timing cover(where you have to cut it to fit the 2g engine mount.
I'll try to find a picture of my 6bolt in my 2g.

okay so it's on a differnt computer.
But I still don't see why it wouldn't past a smog test? Don't yall have like shops that just care about getting the money, more than passing you? There's alot in MO that are like that for vechile check up every 2 years....soo glad I don't have to deal with that junk...

There are alot of people in CA with 6 bolt 2gs, i'm sure none of them swap engine every 2 years and most of them are daily drivers.. Unless the smog place runs all your vins, they won't know the difference. I highly doubt any smog place is dsm experts and know what a 6 or 7 bolt is.. My smog test place didn't run any vins, just tested levels :thumb:

If you find a place that does not run your VIN #, it's like you hit the lotto - stay with that shop. All that I had taken my car, they run the numbers of your VIN and your engine. The last one I had taken my C5, he asked me if I had changed the engine. It's was a Z06 (LS6) head swap for my LS1 and he caught it. Since it was newer, it passed.

All these strict emissions in California is killing my interest in modding my cars. I feel like just taking them back all to stock, and just leave the rims as my only mod.
