Ok I'm gonna attempt to do my first and only turbo install this weekend. Doing the AGP T28 upgrade so it will be exactly as stock. Only part I was wondering about was the process of pre-oiling it before starting the car or something like that?? I can't remember exactly what I need to do to ensure I don't fry this thing before I even boost it. Thanks for the help.

Tom

I belive you crank the car like 3-5 times without spark, not sure if you just pull the plug wires or disconnect the ignition. I think its just to get oil pressure into the turbo and to get it lubed up before it fires up for the first time. So whatever works to acheive that I suppose would be ok, but get others opinions before you start as I mat not be 100% correct. Later Corey

I just disconnected the plug wires, and cranked it 3-4 times. That should do the trick. Dont be alarmed if you see a bit of smoke for 5-10 mins after you start it up, it's typical and is only the new gaskets heating up.

Great, thanks so much for the info fellas. Oh and one more quick question...is there a break-in period required?

Tom

You wanna pull the fuse to the ECU in the fuse box under the hood. Then you wanna crank the engine over for a couple of minutes. Watch your oil pressure guage you will get a little pressure. Plus by doing this if you have some bolts not tight you will see the oil leak out. Also if you have a boost controller turn it down to start off. There isn't a break in period. But run it on low boost for about 30 miles till you see that everthing is operational. Then turn the #@%#@%#@%#@% up and go. LOL

I too am going to be doing the turbo install this weekend =) yeah just pull the spark plug wires and crank it and another good thing is to have a fresh oil change wanna feed it the good stuff =)

I didn't drain my oil when I changed my turbo. Just don't take the oil return off of the oil pan. I just unplugged my injectors so it would flood an cranked it over a few times wait 30 sec. or what ever did it again( just to make sure) then it was ready to go.

I didn't, I just turned my car on right after the install. I didn't crank it before hand or anything. I idled for 1 minute looking for leaks. I drove it for about 8 minutes and let it tear up at 18psi. Two years later my turbo works great and has no shaft play.\
Make sure to look at the vfaqs. And watch out for the bottom water line. It's a pain to unbolt and can easily break if you don't do it carfully.

most people dont Devicex....... so HA its always a good idea too do it but most guys dont. Id recomend you do being i work on turbos and turbo engines everyday.

most people don't devicex?
I dind't catch that.. I know you should do it.. What I don't get though is what's the big difference. It's not like the turbo is spining much if at all when the car is idling.

pre oil is always a good precausion that should be taken whats it going to take another 5 mins to do it....... why chance any dammage that could take place inside your turbo?

i just got my AgpT28 today and it looks sweet ..... i wont have the time to slap it on this weekend going to universal studios hollween horor nights =) but Tom sawyer let me know how the install goes and if you feel the difference. im sure you will =)

I dunno if I'm doing it this weekend or not either. My buddy who has a 97 GST Spyder has pulled a 1g 6-bolt and is in the process of swapping it. He has a lot of experience with DSMs and I'm gonna wait till he's free weekend following this just cause 2 heads are better than one, and I don't need to be making a $650 mistake. Add to that I got this bomb female coming up to spend the night at my place Friday night through Saturday afternoon probably and my S-AFC and logger won't be here till mid-week next week (I wanna notice a difference right away and keeping the boost low for starters is not gonna cut it) and......it's lookin like this will happen next weekend! :thumb:

So since you work on turbos everyday and you said to change the oil then I guess he should then right. Even if he just changed the oil 200 mi. ago he should just because you said and you work on turbo engines everyday.;) I'm not flaming but if the oil is still new then why waste the money and change it. If your gonna need an oil change soon anyway then you might as well change it while your working on the car. Changing the oil early definitly won't hurt but if you don't need it than why waste the money. my .02

well you dont want dirt or any materials in the oil system its just a precausion ....all depends on how you treat your engine and turbo when you get up in miles will determin how long they will last every little bit helps:barf:

I heard you two yapping about that turbo for awhile now. I wonder who will be the first to install it?
I sent my core in to AGP today(25th), cant wait to get it back all beefed up. I wont be able to install it yet though since I still have the stock fuel system at the moment.

what size injectors and fuel pump would u all be using? I think I have all the other supporting mods already

i have installed the 190 walbro < damm does it humm like a humming bird stuck in the fuel tank > and im going with Rc 550s soon as the groop deal comes back =) ..... you can put your turbo on just dont go past 15 lbs and just do the fuel pump rewire to be safe and get that out of the way.

I might just have to call in sick some day this week just so i can put mine T28 in =) so i dont have to wait for the weekend.

any tips you can share for the install?
what tools do You recommend I have when doing this.

1) Keep all the bolts that you take off either labeled or somehow organized. You may think you can remember where they all came from, but usually you can't. Little ziploc bags are good-- you can write on them.

2) You're gonna need a 22mm socket or wrench to remove the water lines from the stock turbo. I tried an adjustable wrench, but it didn't fit tight enough. You'll also need a variety of metric sockets and wrenches, but mostly 10, 12, 14, and 17 from what I remember.

3) You may need an O2 sensor socket. You may can get it off with a regular wrench, but we couldn't.

4) Be prepared to have to remove the exhaust manifold to get the turbo out-- some guys don't have to and are able to drop the turbo out of the bottom of the car past the downpipe, but we couldn't get it to fit that way and had to lift it out the front.

Hey, FourG63 97GST, when are you installing yours? I might wanna come watch. :D And if you don't have all the tools, maybe I could get Ricardo to loan you some-- we must have gone to Sears and Home Depot like 4 times to get all the stuff we ended up needing...

Have a new SS braided oil line ready to go. You will almost surely mangle your stock one getting it out. I had to even go so far as to cut mine.

Tom

is it hard to swap oil lines for the AGP 28 upgrade? i'm still on back order but i plan on doing the swap myself. everything seems kinda 'doable'... thats the only tricky part (if any) i see...

any other surprises i should watch out for?
