Shaft Play?

How do you measure shaft play? How much is too much? I just bought a used turbo and would like to make sure its ok. It seems as if I can slide a piece of paper between the impeller and the housing is this ok or too much shaft play?

Thats about right, but thats not how you test shaft play. Grab the shaft and wiggle it side to side and see how much it moves, it should barley move. what kind of turbo?

It will move side to side a little. How do I measure it?

Best way to measure this is with a dial indicator with a magnetic base. Mount the indicator close to the turbo, push the shaft all the way to one side and then place the indicator aginst the shaft. Zero out the indicator and then move the shaft in the other direction. This will read out the shaft play in 3 decimal places. Great tool! Can be used for all kinds of stuff. Once you play with it you will see how easy they are to use.
