so i take my tsi out for a spin, i just recently bought it (and was expecting something like this), and i get on a straight and nail it, watching the boost guage go up and as soon as it hit 12 psi the engine loses power and i hear a bang and see a puff of black smoke shoot out of my hood... is that my exhaust gasket, or head gasket or what happened? should i be worried? i think i can fix it - any advice would be nice thanks. :talon:

i have a 2g 95'
oh and when i tried to drive it home i couldn't push in the clutch or it would stall; i had to downshift everywhere. and it would'nt have any power over 2000 rpms it would just sputter and black puffs of smoke were comming out my exhaust

Maybe it's fuel cut. Do you have aftermarket injectors or a fuel pump? Stock turbo? You should fill out your vehicle profile. To me it sounds like you're either running rich, or hitting fuel cut.

no my car is definatly f***ed up - something is wrong with it - like i broke something LOL.

just trying to get an idea of what so i can fix it

yea stock everything except i have a TXS MBC running 12psi on my stock t-25

Well can you see anything under the hood that is leaking or whatnot??? Take a look at your IC piping and make sure you didn't blow off a IC pipe... Though I don't that that is it... I've blown Head gaskets but never heard a loud bang when they went... Was the car a N/T Turbo conversion??? Fuel cut usually doesn't make a loud bang and definilty doesn't effect your clutch disengagement... IF at all possible pull a breather off the bell houseing and see if you can see a problem with your clutch with a flashlight.....

check all your clamps before the MAF, i had this same problem when i took off my intake to clean it and one of my clamps that connects the intake to the MAF was tucked inside of the MAF so i would start out by checking that.. i am almost positive thats the problem. Check for any air getting into the car AFTER The MAF... good luck

clutch is fine i drove it home, everything looks seriously peachy - i detailed it like a week ago - no fluids or anything out of place. OH and on my boost guage there is like no vaccum pressure and it wont idle unless u gas it to keep it running LOL

i really think it is a gasket somewhere - just dont know which one  :talon:

going to check the ic piping now

Also it sounds like your ECU is in Limp mode... Take your negitive terminal off the battery for like 15-30 minutes... I think 5 is all that is needed... That will reset your ECU and you should be able to rev again once you find the problem... Sounds a lot like your MAF isn't working or you have blown a I/C pipe off... But the black smoke comeing out the hood is kind of baffling me... I guess if you blew a exhaust manifold gasket then you could get a small puff of black smoke...

the exhuast gasket would be black smoke right? if it was a head gasket it would be like white steam right?

IC piping was it i think- it was definatly disconnected! DOH!

THANK YOU !!!!

i was about to :barf:

i havent started it yet but i think that should solve the problem

U said it came from under your hood.... Black smoke is unburned fuel and the only place that can come from is the exhaust so it could be the exhaust manifold gasket... You should be able to tell with the car running if you have an exhaust leak... You will be able to fell it with your bare hand puffing out... I had a cracked 1G exhaust manifold and it would puff out some black smoke before I got around to turning it... Now I have a 2G manifold heavily ported so I don't have to worry about that now... Have you checked your MAF yet?? I know this has to be kililng you... I know I couldn't be sitting still for more than a few minutes if this was my car...

Edit: Yeah you replyed while I was posting this... So you can ignore it..

disconect the battery still to reset the ECU.... If you have a CEL clear them out with a logger if you have one... If not then find a friend who does or get one as you will be needing one before to long anyways...

wha?

i havent checked the MAF - what do u want me to check about it? i am purty sure nothing is wrong with it i was just fooling around with the intake piping and airbox the other day and for SURE tightened it, but i will check to be sure... brb

Well you found your problem so don't worry... Just was saying to check that it's all hooked up and that the intake pipeing and I/C piping was all in tact... I'm glad you found it... Happy boosting... Don't go over 14-15 PSI of boost on that stock stuff...

i was gonna set it at a solid 16psi after i worked out some of the kinks

thanks again! :p :talon:

for you guys/ girls who are changing parts off your IC piping out with steel or aluminum tubing or muffler piping make sure you either make or have a welding shop make a bead around the edges on both ends of the piping. doing that will insure that the clamps will not come off at high boost or keep you from buying expensive Constant Torque Clamps that are priced anywhere from $7.00 to $10.00 a clamp which still can come off. you can also make a bead if have a bead maker that indents the pipe, cost is around $1000 or you can try and make one yourself with a vice, hammer, and parts from the hardware store. P.S. over tightening regular hose clamps will snap the clamp out of place. tighten the clamp just enough don't try and get the last turn out of it.

$400. $1000. give or take a few hundred. hehe, last i checked for an automatic it was $1000. your price was most likley a manual. am i right?
