Thought that popped in my head. When using a medium grit, 240 - 280, hone how much material is honed off. For a time factor, so for every 10 seconds.

That depends on the type of hone, rotation and stroke speed, type of lubricant used, and amount of tension on the shoes. It can be anywhere from .0002 to .002 and beyond. Just too many variables to to be accurate.

you Usually won't take over .005" off unless you use a 240 grit at a Really high speed for a Really long time. Although I've seen people who don't know what they're doing spin the hell out of the brush and take over .010" off.

DAMN .005? Did you mean .0005? Because .002-.003 is the factory piston wall clearance I think, going from memory. .005 Could seriously throw off someone even using forged pistons, .010 you pretty much bored the block over.

What amazes me is this: http://www.rosspistons.com/pdf/ross_racing_pistons_installation.pdf Ross' piston install instructions. Pistons used for install guide A have a little step below the oil ring groove, as opposed for Pistons in install B dont. Both are made from 2618 T-61 alumium but look at the clearance differences for NA cars. A is .007 while B is .003. I would guess different silicon content?

ive been wondering about this also because i bought a set of standard bore 2g pistons and my block is in perfect shape. it wa sin a daily driven car that didnt bend any valves. i have 2 blocks actually and both have perfect cylinder walls. no sratches scars nothing. i was just gonan hone the cylinders to make sure everything is good and clean then instann the pistons with new rings

can you get different sized rings to match the hone to get a proper seal if to much is taken out beyong the factory specs.

usually stock bore rings are fine unless you go go over the magic number .005". You won't have to file as much off of the rings when you set the ring gap.

I honed 80k miles original motor and an running stock bore 2G pistons. You only need to hone until you get the cross-hatch marks.
