The headgasket went in a 91 eclipse gsx. Also had done a compression check a while back and it showed cyl 1 was at 125 so i decided to just rebuild everything while it was apart. engine has 124k on it. So i got some questions.

1. I was more or less interested in doing a basic rebuild....where can I get a checklist of everything?

2. where can I buy it as a kit or do I have to assemble a kit myself.

3. The goal is a high to mid 11 car on pump. things that are also geting installed are a 50trim, a front mount, 255 pump and injectors along with a new clutch (not sure which yet). Possible cams also. So suggestions are appreciated. I'm kind of working on a semi-budget but money can be arranged with time for the build up if the basic rebuild is not enough.

how hard is the Balance Shaft Eliminator to do?

Theres a how to on the Vfaq.com and since ill be in there it should be no problem. Slap in the 2 block off bearings and bolt up the stubby shaft and jb weld in the block off plate. :thumb: Then reasemble like normal.

Is the balance shaft removal something a basic mechanic could do if I was already
paying them to do a engine rebuild (i dont have the tools nor the experience)

Im trying to figure out how much a rebuild is going to run me and what I needed to get, I think your checklist has me set on prices and such, now I just need to find a local mechanic I trust to do the work. ^_^

Im sure a good local mechine shop can do it for you, I may have them do the remval for me also. Im in the same boat looking for a very good trustworthy machine shop. IT would probably be a good idea to print out the how to on removing the balance shafts while bringing it to the machinest. My guess is $500 to refurb the block and assembly the bottem end. (Bore, grind crank, assemble, Balance shaft removal, and balance assembly)

Removing balance shafts is a very simple job when the block is out of the car. It cost me about $480 for machine work for the bottom end. That included bore/hone/hot tank block, refurb/resize rods, hang pistons on rods, polish crank and balance rotating assembly. I am assembling it myself.

I followed Club DSM's way and removed my balance shafts for "FREE." Not that tough to do. Took me about an extra hour to perform needed mods, ie block off bearings, and stub shaft, and front shaft plug. In my case it was well worth it because the front shaft driver's bearing was half in the oil pan as it was. I bought my car running poorly and needing rebuilt with the bs belt broken, but didn't kill the timing belt (whew). Anyway it's a good mod and "can" be done for free.

Nice. I wish that i could do it myself but i simply cant. Im sure its not too hard, with the VFAQ and all the walkthroughs that are scattered around DSMTuners im sure its a breeze, my problem is that I cant do my own rebuild or swap because ;

a. I dont have all the tools and i dont know how to do everything in the precision a motor requires.

b. I dont have a cherry picker in my garage and my friend has his camaro up on his lift so i cant do that.

c. I would rather take it to a shop so if they dont do it right or there is something else wrong I can blame them and get it redone again until its done right. :p

Im not a big engine rebuild fan, this is the first car i have had long enough for an engine to go out on me and i feel sooo lost trying to figure it all out but theres not much else I can do but try to find threads like this one and learn what to expect in price and where to get the parts :(

Anyways, thanks a ton for all the info, I think I am diefinetly getting the balance shaft removal when i take the car in to a shop, problem is finding a reliable shop around here i trust to do DSMs, ugh.

Does anyone know of any GOOD rebuild shops in S.C. in the Charleston area, I'm getting a '92 TSi and the chick I bought it from let the timing belt break and it bent all of the valves and the engine also has 183k miles on it so I need some help. Thanks

I don't know of any rebuild shops down there, but I'm sure you can find some tuners in your area to give you a hand. BUCK is right around down there near you, and he seems pretty knowledgeable. There are a couple of us up here in Myrtle Beach 1 1/2 hours north of you. I'm sure you can get some people to give you a hand.
