THis might be a newb question, but I think that it isn't.

I have a brand new evo3 exhauset manifold sitting up in my room right now and I thought last night that it might be a good idea to tap it for a egt guage before it goes in my car. I don't have an egt guage now and I probable wouln't be getting one for a month or two. Would there be any adverse effect of having the manifold tapped for the sensor but not putting one in for a while.

If it is alright to tap it, what runner should be tapped and what size/kind of drill bit should be used.

Thanks guys.

Thanks for the link.

Any suggestions on what I could use to plug the hole, and would it be better to get a temperature guage from a store like that aeromotive suppy company or to just get one from autometer.

I haven't yet installed my EGT probe in my tapped manifold yet. I just went to my local hardware store's plumbing section. Look for 1/8 NPT fittings. I think it even calls it a plug. Get the STEEL unit. It should have a square "head" on it. It was like $0.40 .Then just thread it in the manifold, I gave it about 3-4 turns - you don't want it falling in.

I just thought that it would be easier to do it now because the exhaust manifold is already out of the car.

crap, i hate seeing replies like the ones there. Ok, first off if you were to do it on the car you'd have to have the engine running. Why? Because when your drilling then tapping chips will falll down into the turbo and you dont want that, with the car on it helps blow some out but not all will come out. I would do it while its not on the car, thats a no brainer. And you dont want some cheap ass tap so get a good one, i got mine from RRE, i think it was 4 dollars but i'm sure u can find on at sears or something, get a good one, dont go cheap...I have a shit load of pictures from my install, PM me if u want some help because i forgot what else i was going to say LOL

oh yea, also when ur tapping it you arent supposed to just turn it, you turn it 1/4 then back it out. You do that to clear the shit out that you just cut...there is something on vfaq.com on how to do it. Its not perfect but it will help u along. But yea, i have a shit load of pix from my install, i was going to put a better tutorial up but i got too lazy.

Yea, but the manifold is sitting outside of my car right now. Won't I get less junk in my turbo by having it out of my car and being able to clean it up from the outside?

And just so I can make sure.

1. Drill hole
2. Tap it( Is there a standard size? What size are the threads on the autometer guages, 1/8 NPT?)
3.Plug it up with a steal plug
4. Put guage in when I eventually have time to save up some money.

Runner #1 (cylinder one, closest to your cam gears).

Honestly, I would just find a machinest to do the tapping. Sure, it will cost a bit, but you're getting a perfect tap and not having to spend the money on the bit/tap/time you spend tapping it. Just my way of doing things.

There is no problem paying someone to do something you think you may not be the best at. :thumb:

Yea, I think that I might just leave it alone for now, and tap it later when I upgrade turbos or something. I decided that I really don't want to screw with my 300 exhaust manifold right now.
