just got the block (from '98 gs-t) back from the machine shop, only needed a light hone. i was just wondering what bearings are best, OE or aftermarket? also, i was thinking to put forged arias pistons, 9:1 ratio. other than that its going to be pretty much stock with a t-28 big turbo.
i appreciate any suggestions from people that have experience with that!

i've always had good experience with Clevite and FM bearings. I would never use an OE bearing on a rebuild, but that's just me.

What are your plans for the motor? If all you're ever going to put on there is a big T28, then forged pistons are overkill. You can run a big T28 on a completely stock motor just fine.
Now if you're going to upgrade later down the road, I'd save up for some pauter or manley rods and wiseco pistons (my personal favorites).

OEM bearings, Clevites...its all the same. I run OEMs in my built motor; as long as everything fits right (IE stock crank, not lightened) there should be no problems.

I agree, if you plan on upgrading, and you are spending the cash on the machine work anyway, save for the nicer internals.

for right now, that's gonna be it, just a t-28 big with stock fuel system, but who knows what happens later down the road. got one more question though, what about the compression ratio? would you guys rather go with stock 8.5:1 or a little higher?

one thing to keep in mind if you want forged internals is that you'll have to get the block bored. i don't think you can buy forged pistons with a stock bore - pretty sure you have to do at least a .020" over.

You can get pistons with stock bore, but you'll have to wait for it. Victor Research quoted me 6-8 weeks minimum for Ross stock bore 8.5 to 1 forged pistons (you have to get them custom...). The same pistons with .020 overbore were on the shelf. I left with the .020's that day.

Matt.

good to know, i don't have 6-8 weeks, to wait on custom pistons, but besides stock or oversized bore you guys don't recommend higher compression ratios on these engines?

Wont you have to take the block back anyways to set the correct piston-to-wall clearance for the forged pistons?

You don't have to wait for forged pistons, standard size 8.3:1 or 9:1 Wiseco pistons available here, http://www.driven-performance.com/display/431

Nothing wrong with raising the compression, really it depends on your application. If your goal is exclusively drag with limited street use, lowering the compression is a sure bet. But if you're concerned about off-boost power (i.e. road course, autocross, etc) going up a bit might be a good idea, and is what I did in my 3000GT. As you start turning up the boost with higher compression, just keep a close eye on knock and you'll be fine :thumb:

Also, I'm a fan of Clevite77 bearings, that's what I use in my personal engines, no exceptions

the problem with these wiseco pistons though is, that the 9:1 ratio ones are not available for 93 and up, but mine is a 98.
