so i have a 96 GST. its got 130k miles on it, but everything externally was replaced at 100k. the only thing that hasnt been done is an actual bottom end rebuild. i was reading another thread about someone else having smokein upon start and a delay from shifts. they said it could be the valve seal, or some shaft play...so it wouldnt be the rings??? thats what my pops said. what is ur guys take on it.

White smoke means that you are getting antifreeze into your engine which means you could have a blown head gasket.

everyone that has seen it told me it was more than likely a oil burn issue. but i will def. check on that. im gonna take it to the shop tomorrow just wanted to see what you guys thought. are the headgaskets expensive?

you could have a crack in your block... i had a 1979 mustang cobra turbo that did that and i changed the head gasket to find out that the block had a crack and the anti-freeze was coming in. Have you left it in the cold alot? and when was the last time you changed your anti-freeze? you should check it every year or so! If there is oil in the anti-freeze then it is a crack in the block!!

-rings

-valve stem seals

-turbo

Take your pick. Personally, I'd fix them in the easiest order until the smoking stopped. Start with turbo, then valve stem seals, then the piston rings. Have fun.

just do a compression check, and find the source through that route. hopefully you just need a turbo rebuilt kit and call it day. if not time to crack the head off, good luck.

it's the other way around. white smoke means you're leaking water/antifreeze. (just think of steam)

i believe it goes like this

blue smoke=coolant

white smoke=oil burning....which leads me to believe it doesnt have anything to do with coolant.

yah thx alot for the info everyone. it doesnt do it all the time, more under harder acceleration, or harder shifts. anyways, is this something urgent or can it wait at all? i just ordered an HKS carbon ti system for only 500, i thought it was a good deal considering they are like 800 from hksusa....

but wouldnt a blown turbo really be affecting my performance???

Where did you find the HKS carbon-ti for $500?

:D ebay....auction just ended today at 5 oclock...

eh, nah. ive see plenty of turbos that boost fine and great but burn oil.

mines torn apart right now for a headgasket, white smoke only when i gave it gas and water coming out the exhaust were my symptoms...

YUP! its a blown head gasket...i had the same problem too...make sure if you take it to a shop (which i hope u dont, save $ and do it yourself) make sure you do a final spot check on EVERYTHING...the whole motor look for leaks, loose or missing bolts...FREAK...i made my mistake by taking my ride to the shop...didnt look over the vavle cover...next thing i know it i got oil all under the hood of my car and in the plug wire well....it sucked...now its in the shop getting a motor swap... :talon:

White/Blue smoke is not allways that simple cut and dry, I've had a dsm that would blow white smoke if the boost was turned up to high, I've had a turbo seal that was leaking oil inside causeing white smoke and still boosting fine, I had another that had a small boost leak and the car had a valve cover gasket leak, and the oil from the leak was getting inside the compressor elbow(boost leak area).

Do a leak down test!!!!!! Make sure you know what the problem is before throwing money or time at at. Good Luck :thumb:

Sweet jesus.
White smoke is either an external oil leak (oil "sizzling") oil leak or coolant, could be stem seals too.
Blue is an internal oil leak (oil burning)

Since you smelled oil, check the turbo. If thats not it, replace stem seals.
