Well - I blew my head gasket, and somehow managed to have my 02 Housing explode....

So for this winter I'm thinking of going bigger?

I was thinking about the AGP L3R - what do you guys think? or what comparable turbo's should I be looking at. - not a 1/4 racer but more top end....

I was also wondering about headgaskets? - should I stay stock or go layered metal? what's your experience and advice?

Also since the head has to come off what would you recommend while I'm in there?

(port/polish head,etc)

(or maybe throw some pistons, rods, rings in there?)

-what's your experience with 7bolt (2G) motor's
Talking with Brent Rau - he said he won't build a 2G motor. but would build me a 6 bolt? should I save for a 6bolt instead?

-brian
ps: Give me some idea's of winter projects for my car. (I'm somewhat limited for $$$ - so don't go over board think moderate

If you call asking about the L3R they will probabky try to talk you out of it. It keeps breaking trannies. :D

Headgasket-OEM or OEM 4-layer.

I suggest the L2R.. the L3R is prolly a little big.. my L2r is pulling pretty nicely now that I got a few bugs worked out.

As for the head.. Id personally do a full 6 bolt swap with a 1st gen head if your gonna go to the trouble. Might as well get valves, springs, retainers cams etc etc..

Forged pistons and rods and get the whole rotating assembly balanced :).. hehe.. sounds like im giving advice to myself from 4 months ago..

Good Luck..

Well isn't the L2R - just a tad bigger then my HRC S20G?

As it sits now anyways I usually don't start my runs until I'm in the 4K rpm range anyways...... so spool time isn't a problem.......

And since I don't launch my car (once in a while you might see me light'm up but it's not like I'm trying to launch) - soI'm not worried about tranny's.....

Brain this next step is going to be a very expensive one for you. Personally if I wanted to make L3R power I would just step up and go full Garrett bolt on works to a point but if you are spending the money do it right. However your 7bolt motor is no where near up to the task of make 500+hp so you need to go 6bolt ross/crower with cams etc.

My advice to you would be to tune the hell out of you s20g. It should be able to make over 400hp on c16 and you may find some ways to pick up some more power on pump gas too. But as I said before you next step is an expensive one if you are worried about a budget don’t bother.

I have a huge list of things to do this winter.
And I may not be able to get to all of them but would be nice to to!

-TRE Tranny rebuild

-Head Gasket - OEM 4 layer metal

-Would like Turbo Upgrade - to at least a 60trim (need advice I do want a 60 trim or bigger it's just a matter of which one not why?)

-Tubular header of some sort

-New O2 housing

-Some sort of Upgrade to engine while I'm doing the Head Gasket.

-Oil Sensor's need to be replaced

-Oil Pan needs to be resealed. (what type of sealant do you use?)

-Power steering lines - replaced

-Wheel bearing

-Also have a knock apon breaking hard or accelerating after the weight has been shifted to the front. - what would you say it is? Wheel bearing? Control Arm? Bad Suspension?

The sound only happens once - at the time of breaking (if I slowly increas break pressure it doesn't happen only when I hit the breaks hard if say a deer jumps out in front of my car

I feel like the Power steering and the noise go hand in hand. but not positive.

You will bend be able to bend a 7bolt rod on even on pump gas power with a turbo that size. I did a 12.1@117 on pump gas with a hacked MAS and a SAFC and a few stupid issues on my 60-1. If I got another shot at it when cold I would be looking at 118-119 traps more than enough to bend a stock rod and this is on pump gas. Am I getting through? You will need a REAL motor for a turbo of that size. You just got done saying you are on a limited budget. Do what you want but I suggest you listen to my advice.

Well about 5 grand limited budget.

I currently run traps of 115mph....

Everyone says I can get more HP out of my block as it is right now.

and that 400whp is just fine for a stock block?

I was thinking about pistons/rods/rings - $1200ish right?
do some head work - think cost of my friends was like $500

Then labor to install is like what $2000 if I have someone else do all the work?

Hell Shane or (ecoli) with just rods and ARP's in his motor took his car to 450whp... with out a problem. (well until his oil filter came off and he ran out of Oil which seized up his motor)

-brian
I realize if I want to turn the boost up on a turbo of that size motor work needs to be done. what I'd like is the same HP I get out of my S20G turbo but on pump gas. (ie:363whp everyday) would be even nicer to have 400whp on pump gas.

sounds familier, i also run the mitsu metal, though it drops comp. bout .2 , but well worth it imo. If you saved that 2000 and put it in urself there is a turbo right there, the l2g outflows a green, not even close to a 20g

Bryan how much did you buy your 6bolt for?

and what all did you have to do to install it?

-brian
ps: I don't mind getting my hands dirty and doing the install myself. But I don't want to touch the internals of a motor yet. - I'm not that proficient yet.

I can give a little insight on the L3R. I have been to the dyno once with my L3R on my 7 bolt, 90 model big rods, arias piston engine. The first pull I made, with only butt dyno tuning on the way up to the dyno shop, netted me 370 whp. You are probably saying well thats not so much. That was at 14psi pig pig rich A/F was 10.5:1 by redline. I'll leave it at that.

As for spool. It starts making boost around 3000 rpms. Full boost (25 psi when tested) by 4100 rpms. There seems to be no lag between shifts, almost seemless. I love it.

As far as streetability goes. My wife drives it all the time. That pretty much says its streetable to me.

If you want to know more about the mods to my car just checkout my website listed below.

I recently switched from the S20G setup to the L2R. The L2R is making way more power. My "ASS METER" is telling that much. Spool is instant between shifts. I mean INSTANT! I will be hitting the track in a week or so. All my times will be posted.
