timing belt noise

I have a 1992 laser rs turbo i started hearing a nasty noise from behind timing cover i pulled the cover and found my belt flopping around making the noise i replaced the belt and triple checked the marks and tension on tdc belt tension is great but when i crank the engine by hand in certain position there is alot of slack in the belt and when i start the car the noise is still really bad at idle but goes away at 2000 rpm i checked all of the shafts and they seem to be turning true i dont know what the hell could cause this and its driving me crazy please HELP.

maybe when your belt originally messed up a few of the valves slapped your pistons and bent them. Now you are hearing the bent valves trying to open and close.

i replaced the belt

Did you just replace the belt or did you do a complete timing belt job?

I had the same problem with my laser. The noise goes away at 2k because thats when there is enough load on the engine to keep the belt tight. The belt was loose because the auto tensioner needed to be replaced. The auto tensioner has a little spring loaded rod that sticks out and puts tension onto a bracket and the bracket puts tension on a pulley and then the pulley puts tension on the belt. So when they go bad, the rod doesnt move, hardly moves at all, or moves too freely and the belt doesnt tighten/loosen.


Slow boy racing calls it the 'timing belt adjuster'. I'm almost positive thats your problem.
