Currently this 91 Talon that I was looking to buy has a smic but it has the following mods:
TO4E 50 trim ball bearing turbo
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
650cc injectors
Apex 3" downpipe
GReddy Type R Blow Off Valve
GReddy Profec B Boost Controller and turbo timer
ACT 2600 clutch
Lightened pulleys
3" ractive cat-back exhaust

I'm thinking that the turbo is wayy to big for the stock smic. He's running 15psi right now, but since its really hot around here lately (85+ degrees) I dont think the smic would be able to handle it. The guy has had the mods on the car prob since last summer or fall. Would it be ok to drive the car for a month before I would have the money to get a fmic? Could using the stock smic running 15psi on the T4 turbo over the course of like 9 months cause damage to the engine? My friend said, no since DSM's have a knock sensor that justs retards the timing if detonation occurs...I wasn't sure tho.

I have been searching trying to find the answer but couldnt find any info.

Thanks,
Kyle

I would turn the boost down and you should be okay until you acquire the FMIC.
As far as damaging your engine. The first step you need to do is to research on the setup you have just study the car itself. Every car reacts differently to mods. If you don't already have one, look into purchasing a Palm and get some logging software so that you can monitor your motor to play it on the safe side. With this software you can actually see the effects the SMIC will be doing to the motor and adjust boost from there. Your list didn't mention a AFC, so I am curious to how the current owner is handling those 660s.

Good luck
Steve

The guy said: "Well it's not required that you tune it - they still spray 650cc/min" That doesnt sound right. I would think there would still be tuning required. He said that it also has a Mitsubishi TO4E ball bearing turbo. I have never heard of a mitsubishi TO4E BB turbo. Can someone clear this up for me also?

Thanks

Sounds like the guy you are buying the car from is stupid. I would bring someone smart with you to make sure all the parts on the car are really what he claims.

If he really has 660's and no tuning, then the car will run like shit.

That turbo he claims he has does not exist, the TO4E BB is a Garrett turbo.

I talked with him and he said it might be a Garret turbo he said he would check for some kind of number to find out what it actually is today. I plan on bringing a friend that knows a lot about DSM's. The guy said I could get it for 4k, it looks good in the picture, but then looking good in a picture is different from looking good in real life

well, if it has 660's it'll run like crap at idle and until full boost or at wot.....either way, I wouldn't drive it untuned with 660's like that..... :thumbdown

I wouldn't touch a car where the previous owner:

-Is running a large turbo on a stock IC
-Runs 660 injectors w/ no fuel control
-Doesn't know anything about his specific turbo
-Generally ignorant to the platform in which he drives

How did he even come to a price on his car? I'll bet he knows nothing about the mods at all. Just pass this one by, he probably has been driving the piss out of it. My constant worrying about this ill-informed owner and how he might have maintained the car would keep me away.

If he is running 660 with no fuel control, then that is probably enough to wipe the cylender walls nice and clean, your rins must lone that! after that Mitsu t4 bb crap comment, I would have laughed, called the guy a moron, and left. Dont buy the car.
