You're talking about many different things here. We'll start with venting. Venting is a very bad idea if you are running the stock 2g maf. The air that you are venting to the atmosphere has already been accounted for, therefore you will have extra gas used in the engine. Vening will make your car run like arse and get very bad mpg. You can vent safely with something like the gm maft, where the bov is before the gm maf so the air hasn't be accounted for yet.

Compressor surge is when you are under boost, you let off the throttle, the throttle plate closes and that pressure in the pipe has to go somewhere. The bov is there to detected the throttle plate closely, and let the pressure escape from the upper ic pipe back into the intake of the turbo. If your bov is not functioning properly, it will stay closed and not release this pressure, so the pressure wave finds it's way back to the turbo, causing compressor surge.

So venting and compressor surge or not really related to each other, or venting is not a fix for compressor surge. If you are getting compressor surge, then maybe your bov is too tight and not releasing the air. Do you have an adjustable one like a greddy type s with a nut on top of it?

I'm sure if that you can find a other descriptions of it useing search; but I'll get you mine here. When you are boosting (say 5psi), and you completely let off the throttle, you should hear your bov (even if it's routed back to the intake) release. If you don't here it release, but instead here a chug-chug (like a train sound), then that's compressor surge. It usually happens at lower psi's (2-10), when the bov sometimes doesn't pull up to release the pressure.

Here's something I've been wondering about: is compressor surge and BOV flutter necessarily the same thing? Like the TurboXS and HKS BOVs are notorious for fluttering open and shut on low boost blow-offs. Does that always mean that you're getting compressor surge too?
