I just wanted to let everone know what I ran into and have found out its being a common problem with the older 1Gs.
I have a 90 AWD that is mostly stock down to the exhaust, but all basic low level mods done. I was having a problem with my engine running lean
by the plug condition and that the car would sometimes stall when coming to a stop light. I thought it was the Idle motor but I was running the fuel lines low causing the engine to have a hard time recovering if I didnt give it a little gas to save it from stalling.
I just recently replaced my stock fuel pump with a HP 255, rewired both ground AND positive to the pump and now all my probems are gone its like a new car now that I have fuel pressure
.
I had no other probelms as far as engine drivability is concerned. I wasnt getting any fuel cut at all, but just would not Idle right sometimes (and running lean at high RPMS underboost but no loss in power to 7k). I also am using the stock FPR with NO probems running the 255 HP so dont think you need one like I did because you dont untill you put bigger injectors in along with a SAFC and 2g mass.
I think what happend is that the pump wasnt gettting grounded properly due to the rust on the pump housing causing a bad conection. Do yourself a favor when you rewire the pump to also run another ground wire to a clean metal surface on the outside of the pump assembly (on the top) with the same gauge wire. The ground is just as important as the positive.
As far as noise with the 255 HP is it is very faint. you cant hear it inside the car with the radio on at a normal volume but outside the car it sounds like a hand held leaf blower from a very far distance so no crying over that its to loud because its NOT.
BTW I have a EGT gauge in my car but is not installed yet I havent gotten around to puting my 2g manifold on. But would have been helpfull in this situation.
I hope this can help someone out there!!
