I plan on getting a pair of HKS 272/272 cams. How hard are these to install? Does it require replacing the timing belt or anthing else? I have a 6 bolt motor that is being built and am deciding whether to have them installed now, or use the money for something else and have the cams put in later. Everything on the motor right now is brand new, so I wouldn't want to replace anything again if I install the cams in the future.

I think theres a page in vfaq about installing cams, but I imagine youd have to redo your timing after the install.

if the engine is out and apart already, go for it.

Wasn't very hard. The only special tools I can imagine you'll need are the cam tensioner tool (you can make one but I just bought it), a big ass wrench and breaker bar. The last two aren't all that special, but some people don't have them in their tool box. For the "big ass wrench" a large adjustable crescent wrench will do, but for what it's worth I broke the first one I used, hehe.

While you're in there, you might as well replace the head bolts with ARP head studs. Just do them one at a time, in the torque pattern listed in the shop manual.

It's actually very easy. I did it w/o the tensioner too as well. I just put the cams at tdc and zip tied them there. Unbolted everything and dropped oin the new cams. It is hard to break the cams loose and to tiighten them back in the right spot but I assume I was pullin against the tensioner.

its not hard to do but if you have never done it before i would have some one there who has to help. it might be best to let a mechanic do it if you are asking if it is hard. it doesn't get much easier than an eclipse try doing it on a camaro LOL you have to take so much shit apart. if you do it yourself there is mounts that hold the cams down, they each have 2 bolts unloosen all the bolts evenly i mean across all the mounts. if you do these by taking them off one at a time your will most likely break a bolt off in the head or or break a mount
