Q: Is the JDM engine worth getting????
A: My answer based on my rebuild of one is NO!
This is in referall to everyone who is talking about this, It seems to be a popular subjest, and I know some have either the intake or getting one or something.
Why: Well..... I Bought a JDM cyclone engine, complete w/ turbo on it! Tore it down, got it cleaned up and machined, put Ross pistons in it, etc, etc. Internals all new. This was very cool, no problems. I started putting it together using a rebuild kit. Got to the manifolds, all clear. Oh, did I mention I paid 700 for it! I found a 90 gst motor 2 weeks later for 200!!! So I've got these two motors, plus my 95 motor. Ok, got this intake, I'm using the cyclone. First, the igniter and coils are farther back than a 1g and 2g! But you still switch them out wether its a 1g or a JDM. But the plug wires don't reach it! and you have to spice the harness to get it to reach the igniter and coil pack! Alright, now there is the throtel boby!!! I beleive there are two types on JDM motors!! The one I have look like it wasn't going to work at all, so I put my 2g TB on it, now all its VAC hoses will hook up to the car!! Yes I said, NOW, there is this little thing called a MAP sensor!!!! Jesus! I can 1. tie it into the brake bosster line, 2. cut the intake and weld an adapter to it, 3. block it of!! I did #1!!!!
Also, where the oil filter screws onto is totally different!!! In a 2G, the oil is water cooled, in a 1g and jdm motor there are oil coolers! Also there are no sensors on it that match to the 2g sensors, but the 1g motor has the sensors on it! So I used it! Then there is the thermostat housing!!!!! The 2g just won't work, it bolts up all kinda crazy! So I looked at the JDM, it didn't have a raditor cap on it!!! So I was going to use the whole 1g thermostat housing. but saw that the lower part of the JDM motor was similar to the 2G one, and used the upper part of the 1g. So now I have a MUTT engine! Which will be in my car Friday night , Hopefully. So go 1g if you go at all!! :D
