Hey, just to shoot the sh*t, what do you guys think is the best intercooler on the market right now? I was thinking spearco 216... but I don't know much about the new ones from victory performance. Anyone know the flow rates of the above mentioned intercoolers?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say when they are installed and results are logged, THIS will be one of the best if not THE best:

SpoolinUp's "Cooler" core. I believe the only core being made right now w/ the extruded tube and fin design, which I believe Spearco is switching to.

Supports over 500 HP

But we shall see, if we ever get pipes.......

They have the "Fridge" model which is very nice. They have customer service issues though.

IC setup is very dependent upon the rest of your setup as well. That COOLER core would not work (IMO) very well if you are pushing 400whp+. So no, I don't think at all it would support a 500hp car.

Also the piping on that model is hard to get short-routed nicely. A side to side design, with end tanks on each opposing end is much better for this purpose unless you are running a t-25/28/big28.

Well, w/ the "Fridge" you have to lose the driver's fan, which was a big no no to me. I know the big HP guys just buy new fans and #@%#@%#@%#@%, but I don't wanna spend another $300 just to be able to bolt this on. And the "Cooler" will support more than 400 HP, looks at the flow charts, dimensions, etc. Not saying it'll support a lot more than 500 hp, but how many people have 500 hp DSM's? Less than 50-100?

There are sacrifices you have to make with any mod(s).

Removing a fan might be one of them, as well as A/C.

Charts and theories, graphs and proposed HP handling mean absolutely nothing to me. Real world is where it's at.

This core will show its limits at around 115mph traps. Sure people have ran similar cores into the 120mph range and some people have went higher. Sort of like saying you should run the 1g intake manifold til you go 130mph. Just because it's good for xx and xx doesn't mean it's the best choice.

As far as 50-100 people having 500hp DSM's..that's probably true. However, the topic is stated as what's the BEST FMIC out. I'd have to hand it to the Spearco 216 core, well proven, great HP handling, good flow, good looks, etc. You can get end tanks a few different ways on it, etc. Of course you could probably get a smaller one, and yes it would be the "best" for 14b setup. Best is 110% dependent upon setup.

I would go with the 2-216(IRC).

I wouldn’t recommend any type of top/bottom intercooler especially ones that the inlet and outlet are on the same side. This design has great flow characteristics through the core but is horrible at actually cooling the charged air. A huge problem with the design is that the air will re-circulate inside the core cooling air twice taking up space for the air entering the intercooler. As you can see this is very bad.

I think that extrude cores are good because they are typically stronger than Bar/Plate cores and can flow more through the ambient side of the core allowing for less problems with overheating. Also most Extrude tube cores yield higher CFM rating over other core designs. Why would I still go with the 2-216? It all comes down to the quality workmanship found in Spearco’s Bar & Plate cores (plus the 2-216 is freakin huge :D). A properly manufactured Bar/Plate core will dissipate heat better than just about any other type core on the market and Spearco knows how to make them.

Just look around and see how many people are running Spearco cores, it’s ridiculous. It’s like, buy a Spearco core and your car will go faster type thing. :D

Since we were talking about intercoolers. I would just like to know how well Indy Race Cores hold up to these companies? I have heard alot of good things about them. And they intercoolers look very well made.

I love my Spearco core, its 18.5"x10.8"x4.5". So far it is doing a decent job of supporting my 600+BHP. However, I have noticed the pipes are getting a bit warm. I may go bigger this winter, but I need to start monitoring intake temps.

Indy Race Cores uses a Spearco 2-216 core on their 1g & 2g Race kits.

Yes IRC make nice coolers. i have the street core and its not a 2-216, but it does the job for me and probably most other as well. I know there arent many that are pushing much more than 400hp. Ken @IRC said the street core should be good for most in that range, adn Im well below that now so it works great for me. I also have no overheating problems at all either...

What's everyone's opinion on the Greddy frount mounts? I bought mine a while ago without (unfortunately) much research. It's the 11x24x3 model.

Just a data point...we also have FMIC kits (ususally in stock, ready to ship out same day) for 1g. 120(street) and 216(race) cores for 1g
216 $775
120 $625
powdercoated pipe sets $250
Stainless pipe sets (from Victory performance) $350
I use the 216 core and SS pipe on our shop car (10.85 @ 127)
will also be stocking Victory Performance's 1G FMIC kit soon also.

We stock the greddy 2g large core fmic. for $885
Victory Performance is coming out with a 2G fmic that has nice SS pipes TB to turbo for $1150

I baught the Apexi GT intercooler (24x11x3) and getting VPE piping. Not to mention a new turbo. I will be selling the XSE BB 16g for a t3/t4 or used green.

When it's done I will give my review.
