heres the deal. i took apart my 91 tsi awd apart because of smoking issues. turns out i cracked three of my pistons. so what i wanted to do was to put 2g pistons on 1g rods. but a friend said i wont be able to because the cylinder walls have damage and i have to get them bored .020 over. do i have to bore them out or can i hone them?? a friend said i wont be able to install the 2g piston when i bore the walls out because they wont fit, is this true?? i thought it was the rings that sit the pistons?? can i use the 2g pistons if i bore it .020 over?? he said hell sell me ross pistons installed on the rods for $100, but he only has three. he said he can get the other for 50 bux. they only have about 1000 miles on them. what should i do??? how much will the machining cost?? please help:confused:

We, the readers, have no way of telling if you can get away with just a hone job without seeing at least pictures of the cylinder walls. If the cylinder walls have verticle scratches in them, then you may need a bore and hone job. If the cylinders are not damaged at all, use a ridge reamer FIRST, then remove the pistons, have the cylinders honed and go from there.

Mitsubishi makes 2g pistons in various sizes. If you need a 20 over piston you can go to your favorite dealership and order up a 20 over set. Make sure, however, that you also order 20 over rings to go with the pistons. The end gap on a set of standard size rings on 20 over pistons will be too wide. I would suggest that you check the ring end gaps as well, but I suppect that you wouldn't know exactly how to do this, therefore, ask the machine shop to do this for you.

If you want to buy your friends pistons, take them to a machine shop and have them throughly tested first. You will also need to have the rods tested as well.

Once you figure in the cost of getting rods mated to 2g pistons, its not that much more to go with ross which are a direct fit. For me machine work was $460 but I had .20 over bore, hot tank, head surface decked, pistons put on rods, and piston rings filed for me.

It would have cost me $150 to machine the rods to fit 2g pistons, I bought the Ross pistons for $400 from slowboy racing. The best price I found on 2g pistons was like $250, add 150 for machining the rods, and that equals $400, same price as Ross.

I had the same stuff done ... cost me $230. Machining the rods to fit the pistons is $90.
