Can't get neutral or other gears just reverse.

I just picked up a used 91 talon awd turbo auto.I have had several of these dsms but no autos so far.
The car won't run right now something went with starter or alt.Should I be able to put the car into neutral or the other gears with the car not running? I can get it into reverse but not past reverse.It also goes into park.Is this likely just a linkage problem.Haven't be able to move car yet to look under it.Its at wreckers and tires are also flat on one side.

Was thinking air up the tires and tow it home on the ground all four wheels on the ground. Can I tow the car in reverse instead of neutral? And is there some linkage under the car that just might be bent or something?And lastly what is rebuilt tranny price of these things approx in US dollars?

You have to have the key in the on position to move the shift lever .mine will sometimes goto reverse with key off but not every time , If you have it in gear and turn key off you can't shift back to park ether .I case you didn't know .
