Ugh, I cannot figure out what is going on to save my life! Take a look at the pictures below and let me know what you think. What you are looking at is the tranny/motor bolt hole below the starter. To the left is the engine, to the right is the tranny. The motor side is threaded with a sleeve at the one end. The hole for the transmission has no threads, and does not go the wholeway through. Basically I can get everything to line up correctly, but as soon as I start tightening the tranny to motor bolts, as well as the transmission mount, it starts to pull away like you see. According to the repair manual, there's a bolt that is supposed to go in here (which makes sense), but HOW?! I've tried tightening the bolts, and mount in different sequences to no avail. I am also pretty sure that the Torque Converter is in correctly. Can anybody help?

The car is a 91 TSI AWD Auto, the tranny came from a 92 TSI AWD Auto. I know there were slight differences between the 90-91 & the 92, but I thought it was just with the spline count on the shafts.

Thats the dowel pin. They can be a pain but you just have to keep going at it.

Keep in mind if they are in any way bent, the transmission hole might not fit around it just right, thus letting it pop off. Good luck.

OK, so that's just a dowel pin in there then? there is no bolt for that hole? Now why is it that I can line everything up, and have that part flush, then when I start tightening bolts down, I get that gap in there? It's almost like it's pulling apart, and I'm not sure why.

No bolt in there, no. Try tightening that side down first. If that fails, see if you cant get a a clamp on to hold it tight. Just an idea..

Yes there is a bolt that goes in there. Its a smaller diameter than the rest. I think its a 10mm about 2 1/2 inches long. It needs to go in there. I see you live in York, I live below Dillsburg. I'm about 25min from you if you need help i can help you out.

:thumb: You rock! Thanks for all the help via AIM. You were right, there's one "oddball" bolt that goes in there. Threaded that baby in, and she pulled tight. After 11 months, the car is running again!

Good to hear you got it running again. Glad i could help. If you have any more problems, you know how to get ahold of me. My DSM club is having a meeting in York this sunday, you should stop out.
