I was wondering if it's possible to change rearend gears in my GSX automatic? I know you have to change something else in the tranny but i'm not sure??? Why don't you hear of this being done? I did it to 2 other cars and it's like night and day and when you have AWD you don't have to worry about tire spin like on a 2WD car. Thanks for any info.

final drive ratio needs to be the same front and back. You can't only change the rear.

Ah. You've just about tripped over the answer, there.

It's never done. As above^ you can't run different F/R power distributions on the DSM driveline.
Yes I know but can you change both gears? I here alot of people complaining about being a little slow off the line with automatics. There is no way of changing your gears? Cause the change to a taller gear would make the car launch harder off the line and with AWD makes it even better (no tire spin or very little). No one has done this modification? I can't believe it.

Try this link for gear ratio info. http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html I know there is a better listing, but I cannot recall where I saw it. A factory shop manual should have that info.

I have wondered the same as you, and as usual, you get the “you cannot do it….blah blah blah”. Being “old school”, changing your gearing is one of the quickest ways to lower your ET! My 91 Laser 2.O, N/A, FWD has 4.10’s stock, so that is pretty good. I also noticed the Turbos have lower gearing than the N/A’s. I would think it be an easy swap, to the N/A’s gearing, and lower your ET. If you wanted to get creative, what other trannys might use the same type gearing in the differential?

Like they said, you would have to match the front and rear final drive ratios. FWD tranny’s, auto or manual, also have a differential, where the axles attached, and that is there your final drive gear is. No expert here on the AWD, but if I was you I would just get a good shop manual and check into it.

So it can be done, but……….you would have to check to see if the gears are interchangeable, etc. I have yet to see any places that sell different gears, does not mean they are not out there. Good luck! :laser:

There is a good reason why people give you the, “you cannot do it….blah blah blah”.

The reason is because you cannot do it.

There is one available ratio for the W4A33 transmission- it is 4.02 :1. Which, by the way, is enough gear to do whatever you need done- in some cases too much.

Ring and pinions from other auto or manual models will not interchange to the point where they would fit into this unit.

If you want to leave the line harder, try a high stall converter.

If you're swapping drivelines to a manual, do you just need a new rear-end and tranny, or do you need the m/t xfer case too? What about driveshaft?

It gets a bit more involved when you're AWD.

You can change your final drive ratio by getting taller or shorter tires than stock.....Not to sure how you keep the speedo correct though...
