poynette,
I am in the process of getting a carbonfiber hood, I know that hood pins are just something that has to go on. but, I was wondering if any one has tried using dzus fasteners insted of hood pins. they could be mounted flush and painted black wouldnt even be noticeable. mabey I am just smoking crack on this one, but I think it would work. any opinions? and or ideas?

You will have to weld all the plates to the inner hood well for the fastners to lock into. Usually on a one piece front end there is a flange all the way around that they fasten into. Good luck and post the pics if you do it. But hoods pins should be sufficient.

How about anidized black, flat locking fasteners rather than the "pins" Sorry I don't know what they're really called but they use the round lock box style key and only stick off the hood a few cms. No wires, no pins.

thats what the dzes fastener is. thats all that holds down the cowling on my plane and most other planes. the ones I am considering using are counter sunk just a small amount. I think that I might have to put more than just 2 in though I dont want all the force to be placed on such a small area. I Am thinking more along the lines of 4 or 6. I plan on practicing on my stock hood to get the place ment down. it'll be a few weeks before I get started, I have to put the motor in first

It'd be trick. Would a Dzus fastener's plate area be large enough to spread the load, or would you need to back that with something? The length and the rest could be dealt with.

Has anyone bothered to hinge a CF hood at the proper [front] end? Light as they are, you'd set up the hinges so that they'd just be hooks on the front, and lift it off the car when there was work to be done.

they come in diffrent lengths, and there is a plate that they make to spred out the load. I would think that u would need more than jsut 2 though.

I really like the idea of hinging the hood in the front for easy removal. that would be nice for working on it and for shows, not the my engine bay is ever clean enough for the latter but mabey for some one else.
I might have to give that a shot

Now that is one of the better ideas I've heard in this forum for a while.

A pin setup wouldn't be necessary at all because of the hooks up front, and some light mounting hardware in the rear could be hobbled together and installed where the stock hinges are. Plus, the benefit of being able to work in the engine bay with nothing getting in your way. I like it. That front mounting sounds like a bit of a chore, though; the member running in front of the radiator could probably be notched to accept a couple of simple U-shaped bars protruding from the under-skeleton of the hood. Re-run the hood cable to a pair of latches at each side of the car on the firewall so you still have the ability to pop it from inside the car (with the attendant mounting hardware attached to the hood skeleton). By being smart about the mounting of the rear latches, you could even have an adjustable cowl-induction setup without much effort. ;)

And, just to keep this appearance-related, lest this start to sound like it's functional or something: a forward-opening hood would probably catch a few eyes at a car show. :D

after looking at some pictures I think that the a forward opening hood would require more than just hooks in the front. the shape of the hood with the nose would hit under where the hood mounts now. the removable hood sounds like it could work with a minamal amount of work. although there are some hinges from older buicks that lift up and tip forward and have the latch at the back. time to go scavange threw gramp's junk yard again.

I'd to see what kind of meat's udner the front end, but you'd either just have a couple of curved arms going to a sectioned piece of tubing that'd engage a rod, or a couple of 4-bar links.

None of that bizarre trolly-track like a SAAB or BMW.

I am considering glassing in four pins into the inner hood frame of a CF hood. They would actually be grooved near the bottom and a solenoid acuated latch would secure them to the frame. It would be like having four hidden electronically releasing hood pins.
