I know.. you guys see the title "sub box" and think OH SHITE, another one!

Well, i know what im doing, just need to check up on a couple things.
I already have a sub box, but i would like to make the inside volume a little larger, so i can get those long deep notes. I would like to keep the box pretty light, so i'd like ot make it out of lightweight wood.

1)What would the best lightweight wood for a sub box be? (please keep in mind its going to be a frame for the fiberglass)

Now, im also going ot making it a fiberglass enclosure, which is why i'd like to keep the box light, as it will be a permanent installation and i wont take it out when im at the track.

2)What kind of fiberglass would you guys recommend for doing this? Would i be better off using a mat for the initial installation (pulling it over the wooden box) or should i use a polyester or similar fabric?

3) After the initial layer of mat, polyester, or whatever i'm using.. would you guys recommend using a woven sheet, or more mat?

BTW: I have 2x 10" MTX_Audio Thunder 6000 subs.

THanks guys.

truthly i would just make a small mdf bottom to the box like half sidewalls and a bottom portion and the center channel to seperate the subs (how ever many u have) then i would take a stretchy carpet (sub box carpets seam to work best) and stable that to the box, dont forget the mdf rings that hold the subs, hold them up with some nice dowels, then use a nice resin over the carpet do it like 2 times then add a few layers of cloth (mat is a lil harder to use) resin that adn then add some body filler to strengthen it, its prolly not the lightest but it will be halfway inbetween if not more twoards the lighter end and will still sound good, if u want to get even more sound fiberglass the inside of the box too to get rid of the sharp contours

On another board i posted this one someone recommend using polyfill to get a better sound. ANyone ever used this?

I was thinking of using fleece or somethign to pull over the box, since ive heard of people using that.. and it can be had fairly cheaply.

Any other ideas?

Heres some pics of my setup...

Most common is starting out with a MDF skeleton. Pull an absorbent material, like fleece, over the skeleton and then coat with resin. Let dry. Apply multiple layers of fiberglass matting. Let dry. Bondo and then sand until your hands fall off.

Some people say polyfill works some don't. It's cheap though and worht a try. Usually you use about 1lb. per cubic foot. Don't expect any major difference though. Ever thought of just using a sub designed more for a small enclosure??
