how to remove glass?

All the glass on DSMs are held on by adhesive right? I read the only way to remove the glass is to break it. Doh!!! Is this true?

Where do I get this nylon monofilament and how do I run it through the sealant?

If u havent done this before,go to a glass place that does windshields and have them do it,because if u do it urself you will probably scratch the paint trying..

they remove the glued on windscheilds and windows with a nylon or metall string with two handles attached and they saw off the sealant.

Has anyone removed any of the glass on their cars before? I need to take out the quarter panel glass. I know it's glued to the chassis, so how do I take it out?

Tie some fishing line around a piece of broomstick. Get the other end through the glue between the window and the body. Tie that end to a piece of broomstick. Saw it back-and-forth around the edge of the window.

When the window drops out and breaks on the floor, find another car and repeat.

After you break the second one, cut the top glue strip first, then use a couple of pieces of duct tape to hold the top of the glass as you cut the bottom.

If it was a 1G I could speak to this. I've got 6 of them setting in my apartment.

what about tking the back glass out of a 2g. i have some rust spots that need to be taken care of it needs a lil body work and a new gasket. can it be taken out or ill it crack

On a 2g, you have to cut it out from the inside. The outside trim comes off and is reused. A box knife works good, but they make a special cutter to cut it out. Piano wire works better than fishing line. It has ridges that act like teeth.

How do I do that?

Im getting my car painted with a color change done the right way and they are removing the back glass and side triangle glass pieces. The paintshop told me that they have to CUT out and completely REPLACE the back triangle pieces. Is this right? They are saying i have to completely replace the 2 back glass triangle pieces, glass and all. Also the back glass has a seal that they said needs replaced when they pull the rear hatch glass. Is this just one seal? Im trying to get the real facts so i dont get ripped off. If you guys know, mainly about the rear triangle side glass and removing it please let me know, Thanks

Well it sounds like your getting a good paintjob. I can understand why they want to take the glass out, then repace it with new seals. BUT why does the glass itself need to be replaced? The only reason I can imagine for replacing the glass is if it breaks in the removal process.

They said the glass is all in one with the molding on just the triangle side glass. They say it has to be cut out and you cant just buy the plastic hard shell that goes around it.I just wanted to know if anyone on here knew 100 percent sure about this. The guy didnt seem like he knew what he was talking about on a few things so what better place to find out than from you guys. Thanks, Travis

i tried heating it w/a heat gun,i was trying to heat up the black shit, anybody know how i can take it out???

I dunno if I would take a blow torch to a car :| but my dad use to work at a glass shop and they use to get a needle, thread it with heavy fishing line or strong copper wire and thenpush the needle through the goo (you may need a friend to push on the window slightly to get alittle bit of room if there isnt any. Then once you get it through you can just saw through the black stuff basically. This works with other cars but im not positive about our cars because I havent striped down the back to look at them in a long time. Just and idea though :thumb:

That's a good idea man.

well obviously i woudln't use the torch on the actual paint or anything, just enough to melt the rubber stuff behind it, once the window was off i just peeled the sealant off and reapplied new stuff. I dont think that idea would work on a 1g. because there is a metal case around the window that you have to bend and then replace once the new window is in. but it is a good idea.

I've seen a few cars in the gallery that had different rear quarter glass from my car. I figured it must be an aftermarket add-on piece. It appears that the rear most corner is rounded off and personally reminds me of an MR2's rear side windows. Searching on here turned up nothing. I did a search on DSMTalk and found this thread:

http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141753&page=2&pp=25&highlight=quarter+window

Apparently others have noticed it too, but nobody can find an answer. Anybody know where I can get these for my car?

thats weird, my talon isnt like that
all i know is that im making a piece that fits over the window..
not all that hard to do
