Ok ..here we go. My freind has 98 turbo spyder, and his pal installed his amp...but when he did it, he ran the power wire for the amp straight off the altanator. Since then, the car has been plagued by electrical gremlins. He told me what he did, and being his mechanic, I informed him it was not a good idea, and just to run it to the battery. Even after doing that, it still had problems (lights stay on or come on when they want, power windows and top work when they want, and same thing with the ac unit) He also told me that his pal had the car running and diconected the battery as well...again a no no. I even had to pull his stock alarm fuse to keep the horn and lights from shootin off when they wanted. And last night he called and said the car would not run.

I hated to tell him he just needed to take it to the dealer, and have the guy that worked on it pay for it. But before I thought I would see if I could help by posting this thread. Any help would be cool.

You are right, the amp draws power too sporratically to be attached to the alternator. The battery acts as a buffer betweent the two.

I would not know where to begin in the diagnostic chain. The ECU could be fuxored, or the circuit breakers could be popping randomly. Check to see where boy wonder connected the ground for the amp (I have heard of people running a sheetmetal screw into the ECU for the ground, causing intermitant problems).

Good luck. And slap the shyte outa that kid.

weird way to attach a ampcable for sure..its a big no-no for sure!!

He could have blown soomething major in teh ECU and or some relays on the way....Hopefully othin gof a kind though. Also check to see if they screwed in screws somewhere else in the chassi that might have gone through the steel and into a cable somewhere...it happens sometims when ppl who don tknow thier cars install stereostuff.

Its probably the alternator or specificly the rectifiers in the alternator. They can't handle transients from the amp/s .Its probably putting out AC instead of DC.Have it checked
