Alternator Whine?

Hello Again,

After integrating my HU with the factory infinity amp I noticed at low volume levels I can hear a slight ticking/whine sound. Is that alternator whine or something else?


How can I get rid of it?

Does it get stronger when you mash the gas? If it get's a higher pitch that increases with RPM it's alternator noise. To look at eliminating it I need to know what you're running. If the fac amp is the only one you have, check that no signal cables are anywhere near power cables. If you're using RCA outputs try using a test wire that's grounded to the frame, and hold it on the outer jacket (the exposed metal on the HU plug, not the cable) of one of your RCA's. I had an old Kenwood KAC-8K series headunit that got a bad whine unless I grounded the front right RCA jacket to the frame.

Actually I was just listening to it and it does not seem to change when I press the gas. And it really seems like more of a ticking sound. I'm not sure its whining at all.

I thought it might be the CD mechanism turning but it only does it when the car is running. The signal seems to be clean when just running off the battery.

The head unit is a JVC SX980. I am only using the pre-outs and the HU chassis isnt grounded. The only grounding I believe is through the neg wire on the harness.

Try grounding it...If that doesn't work, I'll send you the plans for a good DC/DC power converter you can build for $20 at radioshack. It's amazing what a few filtering caps can do to clean up your power.

might wanna look into a noise supressor/filter...you can prolly pick one up at best buy or wherever. the problem is either a ground...or your cd player.
