shift kno(o)ob question

i have a momo shift boot that threads to an aftermarket shift knob, and i have a silver knob i am using for now. However, it stays on the shifter by using a black plastic insert and four hex head set screws. since it is a chore to remove the boot and tighten these screws repeatidly, i am looking for a new knob that has threads on both sides to thread onto the shifter and into the shift boot. i also plan on using a B&M short shifter, which i understand has threads for aftermarket knobs. anyone know which companmies (if any) make double threaded knobs for my application? thank you berry much

I don't know about double threaded knobs for sale but what I did with my Momo Sphere knob and thread on boot worked well. I just ripped off the stock material from the stock knob which left me with just white plastic. You will need to widdle off all of the excess plastic. All you want is the threads and a little bit of buffer material (as much as you can fit into your new knob). Push the plastic insert with the threads into the knob, put in the set screws to hold the insert a little better, thread it on, and you're done. (this takes a couple hours but it's worth it)

do what i did. screw your knob on, then lift your boot up so you can see the shifter and hold the boot tight to the knob and use a BIG zip tie to hold the boot tight to the knob. it works great.

I hope I understand what you mean here. If the set screws are coming loose and you want to keep this knob, then loc tite the screws in. Or Razo make nice knobs that have a plastic insert. NOT like the ohters, this one threads itself onto the shifter so NO need for set screws.

yes, this is exactly what i speak of. i have to screw this cheap insert extremely tight to get it to crush itself against the shifter. i've had it for 6 months now and the screws have permantly stripped themselves through the plastic and the plastic is chewed up, and not holding onto the shifter anymore. i was thinking about tapping the insert (as patheticly stupid that sounds) to get it to screw on, but i figured perhaps these set screws would perform the task sufficiently, however, i assumed wrong. as for keeping this knob, it has 6 blue blinky LEDs that add 16.87HP to the wheels, but i might pick up a momo carbon fiber knob. that's why i was asking about the threads on other knobs. thanks for the help

I would suggest looking at the RAZO knobs, they are of good quality but more affordable then momo.

On the B&M: I just did that yesterday, and just got back from a Tahoe run in the snow. O MI GOD. Put off the shift kits and cable fiddling, just do the B&M. What an incredible product. I'm only using it on the 30% reduction, I can't imagine what 50% must be like.

two steps ahead of you. i plan on ordering the B&M from RRE later this week, which is why i am knocking out the shift boot/knob problem while i'm there speaking of which, has anyone tried either the symborski or the RRE poly urethane bushing shift hit? i definatly need to up pick one o' dems because my shifter feels incredibly sluggish and squishy between gears

I have the ES kit from RRE, it is great, no more missed shifs for me. I have also heard good things about the symborski. I went with the ES becasue it is cheaper and I heard the Symborski kit is kinda clanky. I am VERY happy with my choice.

I put in the Symborski shift bushings a while ago and they are great. They really add to the feel of shifting, no guessing if a gear is in, solid shifts, all around good buy for the money.
I also just got some additional brass bushings from DSMparts.com that go on the end of your shifter cables... I cant wait till I can check them out.

Ya, I have the bushings from RRE along with the B&M. It's great. Only thing that's weird is on my 1-2 shift, with the B&M, it like scrapes against something. I've been meaning to check out what it hits but I'm too lazy. Anybody else have this problem??

I had the same problem with set skrews striping out and not holding the knob in place for more than a few days at a time. I bought a momo knob and I dont even have the set skrews in and it doesnt come off. the inserts that they send along are great, if you get one of those knobs get one of there boots with the seperat threded coller, you can turn the coller with out having to turn the whole boot. that makes puting it all together much easier.
