I've been searching but can't find a straight answer to my question. How should I go about prepping my bumper for paint? It is not brand new and already has paint from the previous cars color. Should I sand and prime or is there a more detailed way to do it?

ok ill give you some help ive painted my entire talon twice and ive changed the color of two peroius caars so yeah i know what im doing. the color isnt the same correct? sand it down with some 180 if you plan on primering it and then sanding it again with 400 if you just want to sand it down nice and spary over it sand it with 400 no you dont have to sand all the color off. after its ben sanded nicks and scraches are out i would say to eaither prime it and sand it one more time with 400 or eaither seal it with some sealer and paint it. with a bumper if i dont seal i usual use some flex prime the sealer has a flexaditive already in it. good luck

I was told to sand the color off its it not the same as the paint of the other car. Im really not sure though. I just know that you dont want that color showing threw the paint.

I know that I want to at least get the clear off of the other paint and scuff it up a bit and not paint directly over it because a friend of mine with an mr2 had painted over the existing paint and now it cracks and you can see the previous color.

So here are the steps I'm going to try to put in order according to you:

1) sand with 180 to remove scratches and nicks

2) sand with 400

3) prime

4) sand with 400 again

??

it only cracked because it wasnt sanded enough. i would sand it down with 180 and then prime it. well acually it depends on the shape of the bumper. if its in perfect shape but the wrong color sand it down with 400 take your time then spray over it. but if its it a crapy shape take the 180 sand all the nicks and stuff out prime it sand it with 400 spary it. it will come out really nice

no
1. sand with 180 the entire bumper make sure the nicks are all out.
2. prime
3. sand with 400.
4. spary

Well the amount of prep work needed depends on the condition of your replacement bumper and the color. If any of the old paint on the bumper is cracking or flaking, it has lost its adhesion to the plastic, and you will need to remove most or all of the old paint. Then repair any damage or imperfections, spray adhesion promoter (if any bare plastic is showing) and primer, then paint. If the old paint is in good condition and still bonded to the plastic then you can just sand down to a good clean mat base layer. Then repair any inperfections, because they will be magnified by new paint. Now if the old paint is a light color and you are painting over with a dark color then you will be Ok to just start applying your new base coat. If you are doing the opposite you would be best to first spray a neutral primer before sparting on your base coat. Remember a good looking paint job depends more on the quality of the prep than the paint, so take your time. Hope that helps. :thumb:

it appears to be cracking but i believe it is due to being forced to fit into a certain shape. other than that it appears to have minor scratches and scuffs

Any cracking paint needs to be removed otherwise your new paint will also crack. Out of interest what do you mean by the bumper is being forced to fit into a certain shape?

not while being put on, but during transportation it had to fit into a certain space and to get it there it had to be twisted or forced in.

If the metal brace on the inside of the lower lip of the cover was bent, you really should get it bent back to the right shape. Maybe the brace wasn't on the cover when it was shipped. Anyway, it's very thin metal and easy to work back into shape. Test fit it on the car to make sure it's good enough if you have to tweak that brace. Get that all straightened out before you paint.

the bumper and all of the braces are fit perfectly, all I have to do is get it painted, as of now it is on the car so that I can drive due to the license plate but other than that I'm only in need of matching the paint to the car.
