What does the air space of a box include?

When constructing a subwoofer box, is that just the air space of the box? For example, if a subwoofer needed 1.5cu feet of air space, is that just the insides of the box without the sub in it, or does it have to be 1.5cu feet after the subwoofer is dropped into the box? Hope that made sense. Thanks for the help

The speaker takes up some of the boxes volume also , depending on the size add an additional .10 or .20 to the box.I allways do , and though I cant back it up with numbers when I build a box a bit small I loose the bottom end , but gain in tightness and response.It depends what you are looking for out of your bass.

usually, paremeters are given for the box BEFORE the sub is in it. so build the box with an internal volume 1.5cuft, and then drop in the sub. you'll be set.
