My stock headunit just crapped out on me the other day and I was wondering how hard it is to install an aftermarket unit. I have been looking at the kenwood dpx301, how hard do you guys think this would be for me to install? I have done motor swaps and what not but car audio is just not my thing. I was searching around and I found all sorts of stuff about having to rewire the sound system, which if that is the case I am gonna stick with a another stock radio. And is it possible for aftermarket decks to control the stock 10 disc in the rear?

If anyone else has any suggestions on other good double din radios to go with, post them up because I looked around online for like half an hour and could only find about 10 different ones.

Another thing, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a cd out of the player (it wont eject and it wont reconize the cd is in it). My only idea is to cut the thing in half once its out because it is already garbage.

You might be able to use a pair of tweezers to pull the disk out. I am not sure on wy you are set on double din radios though. Most of the better decks a single din. Just ISO mount it, and use this part number for the pocket from the dealership Part #: MR147142. If you have a bose or whatever it was, premium sound system, then yeah, you have to run a few wires, but it isnt at all difficult.

The stock unit is like most cd players and all you have to do is get a small phillips head screw driver and remove a few screws and the rest is just slip fit/pressure fit. Just look it over and you can see where you can take it a part.

Get a Mitsubishi wiring harness, then solder the wires from the harness of the new headunit to the mitsubishi harness. Looking at the instructions will help you with this, since it will tell you what each color wire is for.

Also get a dash kit (http://www.installer.com/kits/index.html), if you decide to go with a single DIN cd player. I've never had a 2-DIN cd player in any of my cars though, so I dunno if you'd still need a dash kit for one, since it takes up the whole space?

Do you have any idea how much factory HU's cost? They are insanely expensive. I wouldnt recomend buying a coming up on 10 years old used deck, who knows when it will go out. Your best bet is to go ahead and get an after market. If you need any help with the wiring there is a VFAQ on the colors and everything.

Just take the top cover off of the CD player and see whats up. You should be able get it out, I've done it on a Pioneer deck that died.

Yeah I am sure you can pick one up used, but these used decks are coming up on 10 years old. I wouldn't expect it to last a whole lot longer than one that just died on you. I mean it is your decision, but I would hate to see you waste money on a deck that might crap out within a year or 2.

BTW, is your deck the premium sound Infinity one?
