explain a -bridged connection- please (amp)

i know that when you bridge a connection on an amp that you connect 1 + and 1 - end to each terminal, but exactly what happens when you do this? do you get more power to each +/- end or what..could someone explain like how many watts would be going to a pair of subs if it were a regular +/-, +/- connection and then just one +/- bridged connection? thanx and i tried to state my question as clear as possible

couple of things needed to be answered first. what ohm are the subs. what channel amp, what ohm load is the amp stable out, how many watts are the amp, how many watts can the subs handle.
