explain a -bridged connection- please (amp)

i know that when you bridge a connection on an amp that you connect 1 + and 1 - end to each terminal, but exactly what happens when you do this? do you get more power to each +/- end or what..could someone explain like how many watts would be going to a pair of subs if it were a regular +/-, +/- connection and then just one +/- bridged connection? thanx and i tried to state my question as clear as possible :p
