hey I have a 97 mitsubishi eclipse and I was wondering if anyone else’s clear coat was starting to flake / skewer or sortof spiderweb from a central point in small clusters?

It is a black car paint code is x13 and manufactured in February of 97 if that means anything.

Wondering if this is a common thing at all or if it is just another example of the 1 in a million bad luck cases I habitually find.

If you take care of the paint with frequent wash & wax it isn't a problem. Leave it in the sunlight and let it go and any paint will deteriorate.

I've seen a LOT of black DSM's with this problem, mine included.

No amount of waxing has prevented it.

Eclipses are infamous for a few problems:

Crappy factory paint, poor resistance from rust, Sunroof rattle, and protruding airbag cover. Just to name a few. The paint on my 98 eclipse gs was peeling when I bought it. It is starting to rust in a few places and in the hot cali sun its only getting worse. Im getting a $1200 paint job within the next month and from then on its a weekly waxing to make sure it does happen again for a long time. My advice would be get a paint job and then take care of it. But silencer is right, if it sits in the sun or is in bad weather it will deteriorate alot faster. Salt is the worst for the car. If you go to the beach or after a snowstorm be sure to wash it. This helps with the rust problem too. Basically be good to your car and it will be good to you

I know of 4 locally owned black 2g's(95-98)that have the same problem. To my knowledge none of the other colors do it.

PS mines not black. its magenta grey pearl. Black attracts the sun though so it makes sense. Darker colors will peel faster.

Thanks for the input guys, I have always kept wax on it and did my best to keep it out of the sun when we get it (Oregon=rain24/6.99) and keep the windows cracked to keep the cars temperature down.

Despite my efforts, the cars clearcoat on the top near the moonroof and now appearing on the rear driverside cornerpanel and is showing no signs of slowing down, or constraining itself to that quadrant.

My car is black. The only thing that is flaking rignt now is the pain from the hood hump. Very fine little cracks, but you can feel them.

my car was recently repainted factory white 2 years ago....came out really good.

but the only thing that sucks is if i get a scratch or area of the car that rubs another spot ..it rust out like no other.... also there is enough surface rust in my engine and on my undercarage to rival a rustang sitting in a junk yard!..........i hate New England!....and every thing about winter weather!

salt and snow is my cars worst enemy.

In my opinion, about 95% of the 1g DSMs have poor paint. Also, 1st and 2nd gear Syncros seem to go bad.

Bought my eclipse in NC going on 3 years ago, its the factory green on second gens....and the paint had started fade , but not peeling or anything like that....i gave it a good buff job and man the paint looks near new again....and as far as the air bag problem....not on my eclipse but just starting to do that on my 95 dodge avenger ( same air bag).....and the car is black but the paint is still fine....i dunno if avenger's paint from the factory is any different from eclipse/talon's factory paint but i figure i would throw that in there :dsm: :talon: :laser:

I have an all black 2g esi and the paint is starting to crack on the drivers side roof. The spoilers clear coat was comming off when I bought it. I have noticed that I is quite coon on DSM's depending on their location and color. I had a red 91 gsx a few years back and even it had some paint cracking after a while.

yea on my friends 2nd gen eclipse the paint was fading right on top of the hood...wax it as much as you want and it will still do nothing..mitsu factory paint sucks : (

my paint is going bad as well, i have a 97 eclipse thats black also, hoping to get a whole paint job in the near future. It sucks though, my pic in the gallery was when it used to look new, and now its peeling and cracking. :(

I think my car has been repainted, or at least part of it...and my mirrors and passenger door (you can see it in my sig, the whole top of the door..) have cracking clearcoat, and my hood has oxidation...Not sure if the whole car was painted, but I noticed there is a spot under the driver's rear little window that paint has chipped off, and I still see red under it, and there is overspray on some trim in the rear.

My roof is black like many and mine is starting to flake, also, my stock spoiler is starting to flake too. Most likely it's because of age.

over-waxing the car is a great way to destroy the factory paint. Everytime you wax the car, the wax removes some of the paint. This is why the car regains its original luster. The wax removes the old crappy paint on the top and reveals the newer paint below. Also, take notice to the rag you wax with, it will most likely turn the same color as the paint of the car.

I have a green eclipse (G56) and I have no problems at all. I wax twice a year and do not let road salt sit on the paint too long.

Don't post misinformation.

That is true of POLISH, but not wax. Wax adds layers of protection, polish removes layers of damage/discolor. Now there are some waxes that have polishing agents...

But using a true wax protectant, carnauba or synthetic, 500 times in one day isn't going to do anything but make your arms tired and your paint REALLY protected.

^ only waxed 2-3 times a year

a friend was trying to tell me that dishsoap could have been the culprit! the kids washed the car as a nice gesture!

this cant be so can it? i cant see a little dishsoap causing this kind of change this quick!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Unfortunately the clearcoat on this particular car is going very fast and now there are large sections that are actually missing, and more spots that are appearing every month!

Very unhappy about the paint going bad!

And as bad as it is at this point there really is no bother in asking what could be done to slow or stop this from happening.

Its only been a year and a half since I actually noticed it, and now it is so bad there is actually a ~ FOOT wide spot on the top front of the roof infront of the moonroof. :(

It will obviously require a repaint to fix the problem in my opinion.

Is there anything a paint shop could do to help the situation?

I'm really starting to think my car may have been repainted, its a 95 and paint is nearly flawless. Plus when I did a carfax before I bought it and it showed it was an Illinois car its entire life.
