im looking to get a reallllly wet looking black paint job. 1st question: does the actual paint code for black paint matter that much for a black paint job if there will be clear coat on top of it? if so, any code suggestions?? 2nd question is: how many layers of clear coat would be necessary to make it look real wet(in other words, how many layers are overkill) last question: how much do you think it would cost? thanx guys!

ya because i want to get a dark purple that from far away it looks black, but close up its purple and have flake in it and my friends dad owns a shop and he said around 2,500 for the paint and clearcoat.

i wish i could do it myself but no its going to be a pro job. yea around $2000 is what i was thinking. anyone know anything about black paint codes?

The more layers of paint you have the sleeker and wetter it looks, but there are limits to paint thickness. too many mils (measure of paint thickness) and it can crack and peel. After you apply paint, I do believe you can layer as many coats of clear as you want, but ask the painter who's doing the work...and if it looks good to you. The more layers of clear the deeper the finish. I have seen paint jobs with over 15 coats, but it gets complicated and expensive...

There is a purple '69 Charger around here that was painted in 1980 or something like that, they put a ridiculous amount of clear on it, 15 or 20 coats, and it still looked brand new last time I saw it, although I don't think its driven very often.

clear coat is like a bad ass layer of wax that only comes off in time, if you only drive on cloudy days, and never get the car rained on, a couple clear coats will last u longer than the car

Clear coat does nothing more than add shine to the base coat, the more you put on does nothing other than increase the risk of cracking and waste time and money. most places put on three coats and then sand and buff the clear THAT is where you get the really wet look it is in how the car was buffed. There are many different methods that people use to do it. most of you guys are thinking of the old single stage paints where people used to put on a few coats and then sand it smooth and then put on a few more coats and sand it again and they kept on coating and sanding it smooth until they got the look they wanted.

Lacquer is the paint used before the invention of Urethane and Two-stage. It was wiped on in a series of coats with a soft rag. I've heard of hot rods using up to a hundred thin wiped coats. It's not worth it if you ask me. They just do it to be old-school. Glasurit invented two-stage(basecoat/clearcoat) in the late 80's, and it has been the industry standard ever since. It last longer, and is tougher than any paint system used in the automotive industry. If sprayed properly, it usually needs little or no buffing. Buffing never hurts though, unless the person doing it isn't skilled.

Theres differences between paint styles. I myself am a custom painter and i have plenty of experience in this area. If your doing a paint job that has graphics, you will want to lay down your base and your graphics then clear it with three layers and then let that sit, wet sand that and then re clear that again three times. This gives you depth to your paint and also gets rid of all your graphic edges. If your doing just a solid color paint job its nice to still do the double clear coat process but its not neccesary. It all depends how good the painter is at wet sanding and polishing.
