which size and width suits the 2gen dsms best both for performance and appearance?

well it really depends on alot of things.

How are the roads in your area?
Are you wanting light weight wheels?

I have seen 2gen dsm's with anywhere from 16's all the way up to 20's

I personally run 18x8's with a 225-40 tire and they are great....although i would like to run a taller tire.

I just got 17x7s with toyo proxes the traction and handing has slightly increased, but for $1400 I better get more than shinny rims to attract girls! but I wouldn't go with any thing bigger because I live in New England, and the amount of pot holes is incredable. :dsm:

Here's a great way to find out just about every beginner question for any type of handling, or traction issue.

Step 1: Click on the Forum Index

Step 2: Click on the Handling Section

Step 3: Read through each and every single one of the stickied posts

If you still have questions make a post, and be as specific as you possibly can be.

Example: I have a 2g AWD DSM, lowered 1.5 inches.

I need help picking some wheels and tires for just daily driving, but I want the lightest, strongest, and widest tires and wheels on my budget ($2,000)

It will be a tire just for the summer. I can spend up to $2,000 dollars total for the wheels and tires, and can replace the tires once every 50,000 or so miles. And I don't want to have to modify the car at all (roll the fenders)

The streets over here are in average condition. There are some streets with some potholes but I avoid those. I was thinking about 17" or 18" but I heard that 18" decrease performance or some sh!t like that. So should I go with 17" then. And what width should I get, how about the offset?

the only performance decrease you would run into would be if you bought heavy wheels.

if the roads are decent around your area...i would say go with 18x8's. i believe my offset is 40 mm....but don't quote me on that.

The larger the wheel the more rotating mass you will have, which in turn will make your car slower. Of course, it won't be a *HUGE* difference, but it will be noticeable.

The trend that I have seen is for street wheels is a tire around 245/40/17 (no wider than 245, just not needed in a street application), and wheels around 17x8 with an offset of 38-40mm.

Keep in mind you will probably have to roll the fenders with that setup to avoid rubbing.

And the difference is something like 0.6% slower than the stock wheels and tires so you'd be driving 59.6mph when your speedo displays 60mph.

But again, check out the stickied threads in the handling section for answers and opinions to almost any question you can ask.

Then again the 17-inch gsx rims are heavy as shit so me going with lighter weight 17s will actually improve performance and make my car look better. What a deal, rims as a performance upgrade. hehehhe.

Oh and are the gsx's calibrated for 17s on the speedometer or are our spedometer off?

I'm pretty sure that 17's and 18's won't effect the speedo...as long as you go with the same size tire on a 17 and a smaller tire on an 18...but you could search just to make sure. Also...i doubt you are going to be able to feel a difference between 59.6 and 60.....unless you are a human radar gun?

17x7 or wider on 17" rims?

I personally think it's best to have the most rubber on the ground as you possibly can. More traction = harder launches, better handling.

Depends on if you want to lower the car (and how much) and if you're willing to roll the fenders.

Tire and Wheel Size

A lot of people seem to want to wedge wide tires onto skinny wheels. A lot of people seem to want to run 18" or 19" wheels when they don't have the huge brakes that would make this necessary. It needs to be recognized that many cosmetic mods will actually lower performance. For a street-driven 2G, there really isn't that much of a question, in my mind. If you want the speedo to be accurate: 235/45/17 on a 17x8 with an offset around +42mm. If you want the car to perform a bit better: 245/40/17 on a 17x8 or 17x8.5 with an offset around +40mm. If you're really serious and run super-high springs rates for racing, but don't have huge brakes, then your streets can be 245/45/16 on a 16x8 or 16x8.5, which allows you to use bigger sidewalls to absorb more of the road

And the 59.6mph comparison was just to let the poster to know that the difference would be negligible. Street wheels having an *almost* accurate speedo is a must, getting a ticket for doing 75, while you think you're driving 60 would suck. That's an exaggeration but you know what I mean.

Here in California Speed Limit 60 MPH means if you do 61 or more some cop who's having a bad day will bust you for it. Go 0 tolerance!
